More Model 1 Third Issue Help
Many thanks to all who took the time to help me after my previous post. I got the pin that held the broken cylinder stop out of the top strap by driving it out from left to right. Now another question has arisen. I naively assumed that it would be self-evident how the replacement spring goes in, but it isn't. There is a little "hook" to the spring that looks like it has something to do with the second pin (not the one that held the cylinder stop) but whether it goes on top of the pin or underneath it is more than I can say. Has anyone had experience with this sort of thing, or know where one could find a schematic / exploded drawing?

You are talking about the split spring that operated the cylinder stop mechanism, right? If so, the contour of the spring will follow the contour of the cylinder stop, so it sweeps upward. It has been a long time since I removed a spring in any tip-up revolver, but looking at one of my Model 1, 3rd, it is clear that it sweeps up and is visible from the rear when the hammer is cocked. Good luck.

The cylinder stop spring (not the split spring) hooks under the "second pin". The other end of the spring is curved up and pushes up on the bottom of the cylinder stop in front (hinge end) of the pivot pin.

So the rather small "hook" on the spring fits under the rounded lug, and it is the spring that is forced down through the frame to engage the cylinder notches?
On my the 1 1/2 the "split spring" referred to above is visible - it is a leaf spring with a groove running lengthwise where it is engaged by the hammer nose. Is this the end of the same spring that actuates the cylinder stop, or is it a separate spring of which I knew nothing?

"So the rather small "hook" on the spring fits under the rounded lug, and it is the spring that is forced down through the frame to engage the cylinder notches?". YES! The pin must be removed and the spring put in place, then replace the pin (rounded lug).
"Is this the end of the same spring that actuates the cylinder stop,.." NO. These are two separate springs. The 'Split Spring' is held by the small screw near the pivot end of the cylinder stop and is the Achilles Heel of most Tip-ups. They often break and are basically not available.

Many thanks to all who responded. Your knowledge and your willingness to help is greatly appreciated.
It is something of a blow, after the years and dollars I have spent looking for the parts I needed, to find that I need another part - one that I did not know existed, and an unobtainable one at that - but I have gone too far to stop now. This project has taken on the aspect of a quest, and I intend to find a split spring if there is one to be found on earth. At that time I probably will have to trouble you with more questions.

BAW2, split springs come up for sale every now and then. One could be made but it would be very time consuming and expensive if hired out. They are not impossible to fabricate but will require hours of your time.
Check Numrich Arms (now Gunparts Corporation), Jack First and eBay as the part will show up occasionally. Place a "WANT" ad on the forum and cruise gun shows for 'parts guns' or, as I call them: Organ Donors.
