First Post! Think I have a SW .38 DA Safety Hammerless Revolver
Good Morning All,
New to the Forum, and have what I think is a 1st or 2nd model .38 Safety Hammerless. SN's are found on the bottom of the grip, as well as on the cylinder (336XX). Revolver was My Grandma's, and she has decided she does not need it anymore, so now its mine. She states that it was owned by a "Sheriff in Minnisota" around the turn of the century.
Can anyone ID this for me and provide a manufacture date range?
Thanks all!

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! It's a 38 safety second model from around 1889 / 1890.

Hello and welcome. Nice little SH in good shape. Give her a little oil and see if it is OK, go shoot it.

Welcome to the Forum. That is actually a 38 Safety, 2nd Model hammerless revolver. They were made from 1887 to 1890. The serial number range was 5001 to 42483. Your gun most likely shipped around 1889. This was the push button style latch and it can be a little finicky to open. You will notice it is double action only, but with a little practice you will find that the trigger stops just short of hammer fall, making the gun easy to hold on target. Don't dry fire these revolvers since firing pins are prone to breaking and the collar that holds the spring and firing pin can shear the retaining pin with too much dry fire.
Before you get all kinds of advise that it is not safe to shoot with currently available ammunition, you will find that current 38 S&W ammo is loaded very light and if your gun is in solid working order, it will handle these loads without issue. Can a spring break, sure, but it is worth the price of admission to be able to shoot these little gems.

I prefer the model of New Departure. Or just a good ole Lemon Squeezer.
That should grate the molars of some of the ole guys. Mike
