Is that a factory case? If so would you mind posting pictures with a ruler if like to have a copy made
BTW you could try Bills Cases I don’t know if he does repairs but he makes exact copies of Colt percussion Revolver cases and they are works of art I have about 4 of them

It is not my collecting area, but I suspect this is a non-factory case with the box lid from the original cardboard box glued into its top. One of the antique collectors should be along shortly...(edit to add - with the correct answer ).

This box is absolutely a factory box and very collectible. If you look on page 60 of Neal & Jinks, you'll see another example. I also know of another collector that has one. Your box is worth repairing.

Don beat me to it. The box is also missing a small divider in the upper right corner as evidenced by the slot. The box should be no big deal to repair and you might want to look for an expert at furniture restoration. Nice find.

Trivia: the first 100 or so of the .32 Single Action revolvers had a half-cock notch. After the first 100; S&W went to the rebounding hammer and eliminated the half-cock. There were two printings of the box label. The first printing shown above has "Half cock the arm,.." directly after 'DIRECTIONS FOR USE.-'. That line has been partially blacked out in this example. The second printing eliminated any reference to the half-cock and the wording began with "Raise the barrel catch..". These boxes were the only boxes made by Smith & Wesson and are quite hard to find.

Found another factory case and early gun. Wish it had the later label printing. This gun has an exterior strain screw with a serial number well below 6580. Will need to send in for a letter on this one.
Does anyone else have a gun with the exterior strain screw below 6580?

These definatly look real to me, I would put money on it. Some of the tacks for the hinges on the last case have been replaced. The others match the ones on the first case I bought. The hinge profile is the same on both of mine, the one pictured in Neil an Jinks book, along the one pictiured in the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson by Supica and Nahas.
The first one i bought did not come with an oil can so i bought one off the E auction site. The latest one came with the oil can pictured. The one pictured in the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson has the same oil can. I have no idea if the original case came with one.

These wood boxes are the only boxes made by the S&W factory, all others were made offsite by contractors. They are very scarce or rare to find today. I have no records to indicate how many were originally made but they are not often seen and the pasteboard boxes (Red, Yellow and Green) being most prominent. I find it interesting that the letter states that the 'cases' were ordered separately by the dealer but did not say that these wood boxes were made and supplied (sold) by the factory.

I have No. 6495 with an outside strain screw. Unfortunately a previous owner had cut the barrel to 1 3/4 inches and bead blasted it. It had the early no logo stocks.

So is this the 2nd printing of the label? It does not look like the wording is crossed off like my other examples.

Mark, that is the second printing of the label. The easiest way to tell is that the 'R' in "Raise..." is capitalized. The first printing and subsequent overprint blacks out "Half cock the arm," leaving "raise the barrel catch" uncapitalized.
