I do not know why are constantly trying to prove that mine and other members information is incorrect, but I am pretty sure I am wasting my time here. The fact remains that there are several pre-1887 long barrel small frame top-breaks entered in the database by SWCA members over the years. I trust that the majority is placed there by SWCA members who know what they have. Picking out a few:

6” 32 DA shipped 1881
6” 32 DA shipped 1884
6” 32 DA shipped 1886
10” 32 DA shipped 1886
10” 32 DA shipped 1886
6” 38 DA shipped 1882
6” 38 DA shipped 1886

As far as 5” and 6” barrel 38 SAs from serial number 4389 (1877) to 90,000 (1886) there were ten 5” and three 6”, plus one 4” & 6” combo listed. This is from a list of 62 - 38 SAs listed in the database for those years.

There were no long barreled 32 SAs listed before 1887, even though the book states there were some made, along with an image of one in the book. There is only one listed post-1887. This would be consistent with a pocket revolver caliber, since most were left in bedroom drawers or in a pocket. Uses where short barrels would be preferred.

As I have said before, the listings in the database are small, but yours appears to be smaller. I also stated that there are not enough records and resources available for us to properly answer this question, unless you might have access to the factory production records for all small-frame top-breaks to review. I certainly know that our historian, Roy Jinks, has said several times that he just does not have the time to answer questions like this. Roy and Neal did however have access to those records and used them to qualitatively come up with the descriptions and statistics used in their book. Are there mistakes, I am sure there are, but they do not compare to your mistake in making the statement there were "NO" 6 inch barrels, in fact "NO" barrels longer than 5 inches manufactured "PRIOR" to 1887 for all variations of .32 and .38cal top break revolvers! with the one week limited research you conducted.

Stick with your conclusions if you want, but I do not believe you have the resources to prove that unequivocal statement. You know what the say about always and never.

Well said, Gary, very well said. The truly knowledgeable folks here on the forum "get it" - and they are more than intelligent enough to fully comprehend that there are only a tiny few 'absolutes' when it comes to firearms manufacturing history. Some others, who all too often proclaim their infinitesimally limited and usually incorrect 'knowledge' as absolute truth, well,.... they don't "get it" and likely never will.

Wasting our time? Maybe, but..... if one innocent soul is saved from unknowingly absorbing incorrect info, it's worth the time it takes to type such a fine educated reply as yours!

David

I will unfortunately be signing off from this thread, since I do not need the hassle. Your incessant posting has taken all the enjoyment away from simply trying to help out OPs in this Forum section. The purpose here is to try and help, not challenge and question and answer on every single post from every member. I guess that is a way to get your "numbers" up, but when you constantly answer your own posts and post half of all the replies in every thread, I no longer have an interest in replying.

I guess my only way forward is to post replies to questions from the posters & new members and ignore the white noise the best I can.
