Trying to figure out what this gun is.
I was wondering if anyone could identify this gun for me. All I know so far is it has a 6 1/2" barrel and the serial number is 3396. Hopefully I can get more information once I get to see the gun in person. Thanks in advance

I don't know much about S&W antique revolvers but it has adjustable sights and I know that is a very good thing.

I had to download the pictures to see it. If it is all matching it sure will be a nice one. I have never seen grips like those on one of these.

Thanks for the quick response guys. I should be able to look at it tomorrow and I'll try to get a few more detailed pictures.

Welcome (back - 4 posts in almost 6 years ).
If you buy it, this one would be well worth a letter of authenticity from the SWHF. The wood stocks are unusual and may be factory...oh yes, it's also a Model 3 Target!

Are those images from the seller? Something appears to not be right with the image that I enlarged. Exactly where the barrel assembly serial numbers should be looks to have large pixels like they were photo-shopped out of the image???? Download the attached image and enlarge it further and you might see something not quite right. Take a strong magnifier with you to see those serial numbers on each side of the top latch and check the top latch underside as well.
I hope I am wrong about this, but better safe than sorry.
BTW, those stocks are worth north of $500 by themselves. Manufacturing stopped in 1908 and only a handful of post-1910 NM3s were sold, and most of those had hard rubber stocks. The NM3 stocks are unique to that model and the 320 RR only as far as I can tell. Photo is K frame and NM# stocks.

I was able to go look at the gun today. Still no price but I took some more pictures for you guys. I found 1 serial that didn't match and it's on the latch. The one on the back of the ejector star matched but I wasn't able to get a picture of it. So with mismatched serial numbers and being refinished by S&W what would it be worth?

So that changes things slightly and now you have good and bad news, but I still do not understand why the seller blocked out a matching serial number?? The latch that does not match raises the possibility that the NM# did not start life as a target revolver.
1917 return date to the factory is a plus, since the stocks and maybe a refinish from the factory was done at that time as well. Without a factory letter, I would hesitate paying target prices for an undocumented gun.

I checked both grips for a serial number but didn't see anything. Thanks again for all the help.

My guess; someone had a standard NM#3 refinished in 1917. They may or may not have asked to convert the revolver to a target sighted gun. I'm betting that the sights were added later but not by S&W. It's a nice piece either way.

A SWHF records search might be in order. It should show just what was done in 1917. (Or has the Foundation gone back that far??)

I would agree with Mike's opinion. I also suspect the stocks may be from a much later time, probably from the time the Heritage guns were issued, as they had that style stocks. Ed

Lets assume (yes I know)for the moment it started life as a standard model. If it has been refinished it is a very good perhaps factory finish grips aside what is it worth real world?

I do not understand why the gun remains unpriced by the seller.
Is he unsure of what he has or just fishing?

As far as I can tell, the OP is the potential buyer and has viewed the gun a few times. Who knows what the seller is up to, but likely unsure whether to sell or keep the gun. I have read more than a few threads where the OP has said they had been after this gun or that for a long time before finally buying from uncertain sellers.

I just got a price a few minutes ago and will be buying it soon. Supposedly the seller already has a letter on the gun. Once again thanks for all your help.
