Default This One Hurts To Look At

I was researching closed auctions, and saw this one. I can only speculate it was a confiscated gun.

Looks like it was intentionally being made "inert".

In NYC, even though antiques are supposed to be exempt from FFL regulations (with conditions, of course), in the 1960s-1970s you could go to Sarco or Bannerman (till 1960s) and other large army / navy surplus stores would sell antique firearms, most sold were ex US guns like the Schofield, and Colt SAA that were made inactive.

As a child and young teenager, I've seen Colt SAA and Schofiled revolvers made inoperable, usually by grinding off the firing pin and leading the full length of the barrel. It was then safe and legal for the average consumer / buyer.

At about 8 years old, my Uncle brought me a Colt SAA, with the firing pin defaced and the barrel completely filled with lead Also, in the cylinder was filled with "something" (perhaps lead) that it would not chamber a round. It had no grips on it but the mechanics worked well on the SAA. After I had been playing with it for a few hours and completely enamored with it, my Mom asks Uncle "C" if it was a real gun. He explained it once was a real gun but now it is impossible to make it fire. It was essentially a wall hangar or a child's toy.

That as it. When Mom found it it had been a REAL gun, that was it. Uncle "C" had to take it back with him. I never forgave Mom.

My Mattel "shootin' shell" revolvers (which had been my pride and joy) were now sorry 2nds to the real (but beat up, junker) Colt SAA.
with it.

Default Fixable and worth it

Looks like a 44 WCF Frontier late serial number with a ton of original nickel finish on it. Wish I saw it.

It's fixable too. Where they cut the frame would not have damaged any internals so it can be welded back to a functioning antique Smith. Crown the barrel and install a front sight? It's got some value with all that finish. Course you'd have to fill in that gouge where they removed the frame number also but that's easy.

What's so unusual. Hasn't anyone ever seen the .44 bicycle gun before?
