Default 38 Safety 2"

I just got the letter back on this S&W and thought it was worth putting on the Forum. I purchase this revolver in 1996 but never lettered it, although I used it in some displays. I was fortunate to finally find the correct box for it so I decided to send for a letter. The letter has some interesting details. This Safety Hammerless was shipped on December 8, 1935 and delivered to the City of Greenville Police Department, Greenville, South Carolina. It was in a shipment of five units all in the same configuration (2" barrel, blue finish, wood stocks). The letter further states that all 38 Safety Hammerless Fifth Models with 2 inch barrels had pinned front sights.

Interestingly I bought the box from a S&W Collector who lives in North Carolina, about 180 miles from Greenville.

Somewhere there are four more Safety Hammerless just like it.

Very nice find! IF you have had it since 1996, I am not going to hold my breath for a range report but it does look like it would be fun to shoot.

Mighty nice!!

Those are such charming little S & Ws..!

Interesting that a Police Department ordered five of them...I like that, that's really neat.

It'd be fun to see what Holsters they had for them, if such existed...or if they were strictly 'Pocket' Carry in a Jacket Pocket or Coat Pocket.

What I find interesting is having been ordered by a Police dept. that it evidently was never ever used. I don't even see a turn line in the picture. Must have been issued to an administrative person that put it in their desk drawer and never took it out.
