What have I got
Picked this up recently from an elderly gentleman not sure of the model so I will try and describe everything on it. Serial #35367 the cylinder has 2 patent dates April 3rd, 1855 and July 5th, 1859. The top of the barrel says Smith & Wesson Springfield Mas. I got it for $200 so I figured why not

You have a nice Smith & Wesson Model 1 second issue with that serial number could have shipped in the civil war time frame. If the other side is as nice as the one shown you got a bargain. I would say you could double your money, and possibly more. Do not shoot standard 22 shorts in it some of us use 22 short CB ammo but only if it times and locks on each cylinder well.

And specific disassembly/assembly instructions are contained in Chicoine's ANTIQUE FIREARMS Assembly/Disassembly. Common repairs (and recommended special tools) are treated in Chicoine's GUNSMITHING GUNS OF THE OLD WEST

The internals need cleaning, gummy oil and just want to make sure I don't lose any parts.

I would advise just removing the grips carefully and a good soak in mineral spirits or the like. I would not take it apart.

And not surprisingly, nowhere in either of these books is there even a hint of cleaning it properly without disassembling it.

Remove the stocks and sideplate then spray aerosol Carb & Choke cleaner which will dissolve and blow out any dried oil and grease. Spray it, blow it out and repeat a couple times. To remove any possible black powder residue, soak it in Dawn and water, rinse and blow out the water. Apply oil and blow out the excess . . . and you should be good to go.
