Strange Model no. 2 Old Army
Hi
This week I bought a strange Model No. 2 Old Army from a marketplace online here in the Netherlands. I only saw some pictures and was willing to gamble and bought the revolver.
Now I received it yesterday and first thing I noticed, no address on the barrel and no patent on the cilinder.
Only 8 marks, 5 on the cilinder, 2 on the barrel and 1 on the frame
I did some searching but couldn’t find anything useful, It looks like a little bit like the Birmingham proof marks.
Serial number is 4089 only on the cilinder and barrel are visible, on the grip it’s almost al worn off.
.32 rimfire Calibre.
6” barrel length.
Fixed sights.
Does any one know what this piece is?
Thank you

You have a nice condition English or European made copy of the S&W Model 2 Army, these are not uncommon but are somewhat scarce in excellent condition such as this one.

I have its brother. British proofed. Nicely made and major parts interchange with the S&W Model #2 Army. Great find.

Copy
Webley most definitely made copies. You can search the webs and take a look at several. Some engraved and cased.
However, it doesn’t look the same as the Webley copy. The only other probable candidate would be Tranter. Looks a lot like their style of machining.

There is a reference to "British" made copies being sent to S&W for repairs and S&W's letter to distributors saying that they will no longer repair foreign copies. Unfortunately, the reference escapes me. Parson's?

This Dublin made copy is super well made and fine condition. Kavanaugh
was in business from 1796 to 1928. Thanks for a thread to show it.
This model is less a perfect copy of the S&W model and more a similar
design as BMur points out in a following comment.
This area is ripe for the possibility of a focused collection of Model 2
Army copies.

Dublin origin?
Very cool gun Crossv
I’m Not sure it’s the same manufacturer though?
See comparable photos.
The frame is a lot different at the trigger and the acclivity or grip drop is much different. The frame is actually quite a bit different.
Also the barrel latch is totally different as is the shell ejector.
Plus the OP’s gun is “unmarked” and it is clearly Birmingham proofed.
The cylinder compared to the frame size is also not proportional to the OP’s gun and might actually be a sub caliber in smaller mm.
Very cool gun. Outstanding condition. Mint in fact.
