Default Old army no 2 with bullet slot

Ive seen pics of an old army or a number 2 with bullet or loading slots in the right side. What’s with that? The cyl still comes out. The lug to push empty’s out is there. Give this old newby a hand?

I would guess someone with a rod or stick to push out empties and put in loaded rounds modified it, if the cutout in the recoil shield lines up.

I also have seen a few over the years so it did happen. Guaranteed it was not factory done, but rather an early-day Bubba with an idea and a horse file. I am sure they found it not to be a great idea, since many cases would not just fall out without help, so a stick would have to have been kept handy. There were a few brands that copied the Model 2 and I think one of two of them were designed to be loaded without removing having to remove the cylinder. Maybe that gave S&W Model 2 owners the idea. Glad not too many were done, since it certainly destroys originality and collector value.
