Default Safety Hammerless in 38 s&w

What can you tell me about this pistol? It looks to be in excellent shape EXCEPT someone has shortened the barrel to 2 inches.

Serial # 255455 (I think).

Is it worth anything to a collector?

Thanks

Robert

Welcome to the Forum. I will never understand someone cutting the barrel and not crowning the muzzle and removing the "MITH & WESSON?? To answer your question, there is no true collector value there, because of the modifications. About the only modified guns that a S&W collector would want is something that can easily be returned to original. You could find an era correct barrel assembly from a 38 Double Action or another 38 Safety and would add more value than the cut barrel. Just think, you could call it a two barrel set.

Value of this model is quite low anyway, with most functioning used examples not topping $200.

Shame of it is that one looks to have been kept pretty well..uncut, in that condition, it might have brought $400, cut, it might be worth more for the parts.

People used to cut Down Barrels to have a more convenient Pocket Revolver, so, examples of this from 'back when', to me, are interesting and valid pieces of History.

These have their own following also, and I have a good handfull of various ones myself.

I like it!

Oil it up good so all moving parts are well lubed, and enjoy owning it and taking it to the Range now and then!

barrel snip and grips dont look that bad for a last ditch pocket pistol.
Collector value, parts only, but as a pocket gun,OK, If you want to
depend on something that old.
