Default Rebuilding an original S&W Schofield

Bought an 1877 S&W Schofield revolver at a gun show last year. Was complete sans front sight as is usual with the cut off barrel versions found. Had been nickel plated some time in the past. Other than some poor prep work maintaining corners and such it is OK and still in good shape. Rebuilt the projections that hold the cylinder in when the revolver is opened and made new screws for the top latch. Had the cylinder locking bolt and firing pin on the hammer rebuilt as neither could do the job they were designed to do. Got it back from the local gunsmith, who works at levels the big name pros do, and it is nothing short of amazing! Every chamber indexes and locks up solid, no end shake, and the firing pin/hammer looks like it was never messed with. Have not decided what to do for a front sight but an 1877 dime would be the cat's meow, correct vintage and not an uncommon fix in those days.

Is it all ready slotted and a hole drilled?

1st model or 2nd model. Military shipped or commercial sale to a distributor ? Inspector cartouche on stocks ? (Note: presense of a US stamp does not necessarily mean it was military shipped ) Ed

Buffalo Arms has the 45 Schofield black powder ammo for it. Works great and is a hoot to shoot. Make sure not to use smokeless. Mine came with an old Indian Head penny stuck in the front sight. Perfect for the brownish coloration of the metal. Since yours was plated it makes it more complicated. Also, if you need parts VTI Gun Parts distributes the replacement parts for the Uberti version that fits in many cases.

So if you want it to look correct...
I've done it with a well-used Dremel cutoff wheel that's been worn down to about the right diameter to very carefully cut a front sight slot.
A machinist or gunsmith could cut it correctly with a proper fly cutter in seconds.
Like I said, gimme your address and I'll send you what is probably a factory correct or easily workable half moon front sight.
Your only other option is to dovetail one in, which would look awful.

Ed has offered to send me one also. Am waiting for his reply. My friend will cut the slot for me and drill the pin hole too. I'm not steady enough to try the Dremel on it.

I'm not sure what you are looking for.
A pistol?
or
A Holster.

To acquire?
or
For Reference?

Here's a photo for reference.

I found that holster at a gunshow; for $25.

I did not have my DA 44 with me, but there was one for sale a a nearby table and the owner let me borrow it to see if the holster was a fit. You meet the nicest people at gunshows.
(and a few who are not.)

Books

PS: here's a couple more gunshow finds.
