Default New Model #3 'Safety' Notch

Does anyone know whether the New Model #3 Single Actions always had this third 'safety' notch in front of the half-cock notch? The new specimens I have I'm pretty sure are late models (late 19th / early 20th century) and I'm wondering if that notch was something they added later? Or if it was always on the New Model #3s as far back as 1878?
Thanks!
