The story from my (deceased) father is that this item was owned by his father's family in Germany, and was buried in the back yard to keep it from being confiscated by the German government. My grandfather's brother was a police officer in a German town. Toward the end of the war he was drafted, sent to the Russian front and killed by a sniper, allegedly on the last day of the war. Who knows what may have actually happened!
