Looking at revolver for sale
Hi, I"m looking at a S&W double action top break, exposed hammer .38 s&w. The serial number is 162995. It looks like it was re-finished, because the hammer and trigger are nickel plated. Can anyone give me an idea when it was made. Thanks for your help. I might be buying it.

It's a .38 Double Action. 3rd model from about 1887. It's hard to tell if it has been refinished from the photos.

Plated hammer & trigger means it was almost certainly refinished and the extreme wear on the stocks support that fact. Trigger guard and top latch should not be plated either. Bottom line for this gun is that if it functions and shoots well, it is worth $150, since there were over a half-million made.

Shooter grade
I think this is the "Perfect" shooter grade Antique as long as it's fully functional and you use black Powder loads only unless you take it to a gunsmith to confirm it's safe for mild smokeless. An antique in this condition must be checked first. It might be shot loose in a lot of ways!

Someone got a nice shooter, but it wasn't me. I missed the bid. I hope they join the forum, to find out what they have.
