A friend owns the local gunshop. He got in an interesting piece in a bunch of used revolvers he purchased. It is a Smith & Wesson .32 Safety Hammerless, 1st Model. The action is pretty tight for it's age, not much cylinder play at rest or after the trigger is pulled. The down side is the trigger does not return to the ready position unless assisted(I assume an easy fix). The side plate is held on with two screws. It has the push down latch to tip up the barrel. The last pat'd date I see is 1885. It is a 3.5 inch barrel, with good lands and grooves showing. The other down side is it was painted black at some point. Now that dosen't scare me off (had a Winchester 1892 that some one had painted black and paint stripper took it off no problem and did not hurt the old finish). Since the serial number is 188, I figure it is worth taking a look at for a wall hanger. Any ideas as to value?

I good strip down and cleaening will probably solve the slow trigger return, as 110 yrs of old grease. oil and crud are in the workings. Are the grips hard rubber or? Is it blue or nickel under the paint? Be careful what chemicals you use to remove the paint, as some will bubble the nickel and others will remove any blue. Currently it is only a wall hanger and value is parts or junker value, say about $50 to $75.

The grips are hard rubber. They are in excellant condition, no cracks or chips. Not sure what the finish is underneath the paint. The only place that has no paint is on the bearing surfaces of the hinge and that is shiney, but doesn't look plated to me.
