S&W second mod. 1-1/2?
I recently sold a first mod. 1-1/2 in .32rf since my wife preferred a sold frame vs. the tip-up. I've seen a lot of what I'm told are "second model" 1-1/2's with this weird bit on top of the cylinder. What is it and what is it's function?

That is a top frame mounted cylinder stop. Take out the cylinder and cycle the action. You will see the stop drop into the cylinder window, locking the cylinder into battery when firing the revolver. All tip-up revolver models used this style stop. The only other model using the top frame cylinder stop was the Model 1896, 32 Long hand ejector.

Now I'm confused. I just sold what I believe was a first mod. 1-1/2 in .32 rf since the wife wanted a solid frame pistol. Was that model cylinder stop not used on the second model? You'll note the pic of the one I just sold.

Sorry. The square-butt Model 1 1/2 did have a bottom of frame cylinder stop. It was manufactured from 1865 to 1868. I need to get these guys out of the safe more often.

OMG!!!! Those are beautiful! I know they probably represent years of shopping around, buying and selling, haunting gun shows, auctions, and estate sales, but I am absolutely green with envy!
