Default 44 Double Action 1st Model

this is the last time i'm changing the designation of this gun. LOL shows how much I know about antiques. got this today at an estate auction. it was listed as a .45 caliber so I made sure the auctioneer announced that it was not a .45 Colt. it is in fact a .44 Russian as pointed out by Guy. there were only 2 of us bidding on it. made somewhere in the 1880s. I'll ask Roy for a ship month and year. it was refinished at the factory 8-22. no number inside the grips. don't know if they did that on MOP grips. SN 7312 on the butt and cylinder. this is the first antique S&W I have ever owned. I just couldn't pass it up. Lee

Congrats, Lee! But, that looks like a .44 Double Action to me, not a 1st Model American. Should have a 1-7/16" cylinder and be chambered for .44 Russian.

I don’t care what it is chambered for, that is a nice DA S&W!

Guy, I was going by what the auction flyer listed it as. I will go do some measuring and possibly some editing of my post. Lee

Lee it's a .44 Double Action First Model. The stocks are not original to the gun. They would have been put on by the dealer or the owner. It also had a lanyard at one time. It's possible the the serial number is not correct. It there a serial number under the stocks. It would be on the left side. There may be a serial number stamped on the underside of the barrel, or cylinder. It has been refinished out of the factory as the hammer and trigger are nickel plated.

The serial number is also stamped on the underside of the latch on my two. Congrats on a lovely piece! How's the bore and the cylinder chambers?

You call it what it is-------a .44 D.A. 1st Model. Some folks call it misshapen----others just stick with ugly---still other folks get downright upset with those in the first two groups. I just go with there are different strokes for different folks.
