Default Welcome home 078

I got a call back in October from a fellow SWCA member about a .22 Single Shot he saw in a shop in PA. He wanted to know if I was interested in it. Being I have a number of Single Shots, I started to say "No", when he interrupted me and said, "Before you say no, the number starts with zero". How could I say no. Well, it arrived today. Serial number is 078. It left the factory August, 1905. It had an 8" barrel with rubber stocks. It was returned in March, 1914. It shipped out again to a member of the United States Revolver Association as well as a member of the Springfield Revolver Club. When it left the second time it was upgraded with a 10" and walnut stocks.

Pretty cool old gun there. Hard to say no to one with a serial number in that range.

Nice Club Gun!

I should point out that when one enlarges the serial number photograph, one can see the polished remainder of a five digit serial number. Did it originally ship with a different serial number in 1905?

It reads "CLUB PISTOL 078". It was common when upgrading a Club Gun to restamp the serial number and delete the words Club Gun. I have another .22 Single Shot that is a First Model serial number is 05. It was returned in 1945. When it left, it had a new barrel and walnut extension stocks, the words CLUB PISTOL were polished out and when the serial number was restamped, they just put 5. Yes, I have the names of the two individuals who owned it first.
Ralph Gaylord from Springfield had it first. It was later used by R. N. Watts, also of Springfield. They were members of the USRA and members of the Springfield Revolver Club.
