Unhappy Single Action in a Top Break 4th?

I have been a firearms collector for many years but my S&W knowledge is limited. I recently bought at auction a S&W DA 4TH Top Break in .38 S&W. The auction description was very "cleverly" written to not include any mention of the single action function of the revolver. If functions very well in DA but not in SA. Does the hand not rotate the cylinder until very late in the SA function? Could it be a DA only (it has a hammer). Two external pictures below. Any chance to fix the SA mechanism or did I just learn another lesson in not asking enough question BEFORE bidding.

Your .38, DA 4th is not DAO - unless someone made it that way. The rear sear and/or hammer may be damaged and needing replacement. You must get a 4th model (or 5th) rear sear or hammer as S&W changed the design with the 4th model. Try Gun Parts Corporation, Jack First and eBay as they show up occasionally there.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! It is possible the single action notch is clogged with soot/dirt so the sear cannot engage. Remove the grips and soak the gun in a 50-50 mixture of auto transmission fluid and acetone in a sealed container for a few days to a week. Then, blow out the action with aerosol carb/brake/parts cleaner until the effluent runs clear. If that doesn't fix it, it may need for you to go into the action to clean it or to find out if the notch is damaged.

I think Wiregrass has the place to start. It is amazing how many posts have reported this problem in recent times. Guy's recipe is about the best for loosening crud in the action. If it works you have spent a little time but not much money.

Default They actually gave me a refund!

I really appreciated the suggests but I took a shot that the auction house might respond to an e-mail and they DID! Offered a full refund (less return shipping). I want to acknowledge Donley Auction Services (on Proxibid) for doing the right thing!
