D Prefix on Third Model Perfected. Need More Info on grip frame
This one has me puzzled. I am not very familiar with this model and I'm not seeing anything that explains the D. I'm kind of liking what I believe is extra, owner applied checkering on the stocks.

The first thing that comes to mind is that it might be a duplicate serial number. I've seen Rugers with a 'D' prefix that I know for fact are duplicate S/N's. I suppose in this case, it could also have been a display gun of some sort.

I like those grips, the other odd thing is the "D" is separated from the serial number. You should ask Roy, as someone on the other side of the forum also may know.

See the following letter from Mr. Jinks regarding another singleshot. On mine, the "D" followed the s/n.

As said above, "D" means the serial number has been duplicated.

Yes. Roy confirmed the duplicate number point on the other side. Today I am taking it, and my 44 Target Model of 1950 to the range. Will report.

This little single shot is very accurate with RWS subsonic and pretty decent with Remington standard velocity. DA trigger is 10 with SA a bit too light for me.
One feature has me wondering, and that is the rebated back strap. I have not heard or read anything that makes reference to this. (see photo) The stocks are not cut to match this grip frame profile. Any insight on this?
This one might need a letter.

Fancy Machine Work on Inside of Side Plate
I have not seen this before either. I admit I'm not very familiar with these guns, so it may be normal. SN appears in recess as well.
This reminds me of damascus patterns on knife blades, but without layered steel.

I believe the wooden targets that are on it enclose the backstrap and can be used on a rebated or standard round butt frame. It is possible your gun originally came with Regulation Police grips which would fit that rebate just like the RP's. Are they numbered to the frame? Also, I have seen other guns from this era (early 1920's) with jeweling in the action area. Is there any indication on the frame that the gun went back for service work? An expert will have to say if the jeweling was factory. It could have been done post-factory to reduce friction in the action.

Yep. 9402 in pencil on right panel. BTW it was shipped Nov. 1920.
Nothing to indicate a return to the factory.
