Asked about serial number location in m-1911 thread and was answered by 1891SingleShot.Thanks for the answer.I went and looked at the gun again. The only markings on the barrel are the standard S&W stuff with Mod.of 91 on top and 22 long rifle ctg on left side.No serial number on barrel,may be one on latch,but I could not read it.Is this most likely a put together gun?

Are you sure you are looking in the right place on the barrel?
Here a picture of where the number is. This is a .44DA, but the numbers are in the same place on the Single Shots. (Behind the latch).
I checked my 2nd Mod SS and the numbers are really small, so get a magnifer and clean the area well. (There also should be a number on the bottom of the latch.)

No, I did not look there.There are some numbers on the latch, but my old eyes couldn't read them.Do you have to remove the latch to read them?Will look at it again later.

No need to remove the latch. In fact if you look closely at the picture you can make out some numbers on the bottom of the latch just to the left of the ones on barrel extension.

OK,The number on the barrel matches,it's on the side of that ear.Still can't read the number on the latch.The latch does not have the target sight on it.Is the target sight an integral part of the latch or a separate piece?Are these sights available?

Gary, Is the barrel you are talking about a single shot target barrel? Or the Model 1891 revolver barrel? If it's a target barrel, then the latch should have the target sight on it. If the latch does not have the target sight, but is the service sight style used on the revolver barrel, then it won't be numbered to the target barrel as it is a replacement latch. You say the latch has a number on it but you can't read it. Get your grandson to read it to you, as we need that number to answer your questions! Good luck.

It's an 8" S.S. barrel,has front target sight.Funny you should mention grandson,because I am out of town visiting them this weekend.Of course the gun isn't.Don't know what a service sight looks like.The latch has a flat blade with a long sharp v in it,if I remember correctly.Looks too low to me to be a sight.There are 2 small ears about in the middle of the latch.Are these the service sight?Won't be able to see the gun until sometime Sunday at the earliest.

Thanks for posting the picture. I always have a hard time explaining where the serial number is on the barrels of these top-breaks.

The flat blade with the notch is the rear target sight, and the small ears in the middle of the latch are service sights.

Speaking about these flat blade target sights, does anyone have any of these or know where they could be acquired? I need a couple of them for some of my single shot barrels. Thanks.

It seems to be the correct latch.Was able to read the number outside with a 2X magnifying glass.It is missing all the target sight parts.Will probably buy it anyway.The older than me gentleman needs the money and I need a winter project.
