NEVER use any kind of cleaning solvent, especially gun solvents, on a gun with nickel plating. What will happen over time is it will cause the nickel to start flaking and peeling off around edges of the gun. When that happens it can't be changed. Almost all gun cleaning solvents state not to use them on nickel finishes. Also avoid anything with ammonia in it.
One of the products that I use is called Simple Green. It's a natural cleaner that can be mixed with or without water and is safe on just about anything. This is what I use in place of gun solvent when cleaning the bores on my nickel plated guns and wiping off powder residue. Just make sure to dry your gun thoroughly and wipe it down with a light coating of gun oil. And make sure to swab the bore and chambers with oil since they can rust even on a nickel plated gun.
Another product that I use is Kleen-Bore Kleen Brite Gun Polish. It's safe to use on blued, stainless and nickel finishes. It removes powder fouling, tarnish, discoloration, minor surface rust [not pitting], and polishes the gun. It also leaves a protective coating on the finish so you shouldn't have to wipe it down with oil. But just make sure to swab the chambers and bore with oil as I stated above. The only thing is it is a little messy as it is a polishing cream.
Or you could do it the old fashioned way with hot soapy water, dry the gun and coat it with oil.
With a gun as old as yours, don't be surpised if you find pitting in the barrel after it is cleaned.
Hope this helps you!
