It is interesting how the serial numbers of the New Model #3's don't correlate overly well with shipping dates. I thought it would be interesting to do the same chart for the original Schofields, but with an additional column indicating what model of Schofield it is. I don't have an original Schofield (but I'm hunting for one), but I do have some data to start out with. Just qoute this message (or the latest updated one) and insert the data:

Serial #...Shipped........... Type
1222 ...... July 12, 1875 ... 1st Model

To enter new data, just quote this message (or the latest updated one) and insert the data, using the right number of spaces and dashes to keep things orderly:
Quote:

Serial #...Shipped........... Type
540 ....... no date ........... 1st Model/US
1222 ...... July 12, 1875 ... 1st Model/US
5525 ...... no date ........... 2nd Model/US

6094 ...... Nov 30, 1876 ... 2nd Model/civil/nickel
6155 ...... Oct 12, 1876 .... 2nd Model/US
6557 ...... Nov 21, 1876 ... 2nd Model/civil/Nickel

When 'no date' is entered into the chart, does that mean that the records do not contain that information, or does it mean that the gun has not yet been lettered by Roy Jinks? Either way, it's good to have the info in the chart ... at least we know that that serial number still exists and what kind of Schofield it is.

NO DATE on my posting means I do not have a letter on the gun. Personally I think it is not of much use to letter a military gun

Thanks, Gary. That clears up that question. It is still good to have your data included in the chart. I should add that we do not have to restrict ourselves to posting data for guns we personally own. If we have knowledge of other serial numbers, feel free to post that info as well, if you have not already done so. I do know that not all the serial numbers already posted here are personally owned by the person who posted them. For the purpose of this chart, it is not important who owns the particular six shooter; only the data is important. The data will stay the same no matter how many times the gun changes hands.

Finally bought a nice Schofield, but it will be probably another week and a half before I receive it. I've added it's serial number to the list here. The interesting thing is that it is #5524, and M1911 has the very next serial number, #5525. How about that! I've posted a photo of it below the chart. I can hardly wait to receive it.

Serial #...Shipped........... Type
540 ....... no date ........... 1st Model/US
1222 ...... July 12, 1875 ... 1st Model/US
3979 ...... no date ........... 2nd model/US
5524 ...... no date ........... 2nd model/US
5525 ...... no date ........... 2nd Model/US
5866 ...... no date ........... 2nd Model/US
5985 ...... no date ........... 2nd Model
6094 ...... Nov 30, 1876 ... 2nd Model/civil/nickel
6155 ...... Oct 12, 1876 .... 2nd Model/US
6557 ...... Nov 21, 1876 ... 2nd Model/civil/Nickel

There are no shipping dates available for military contract Schofields in the factory shipping records. There was no need to record shipments as there was with guns sent to distributors, as all guns went to the Springfield Armory. Roy Jinks uses the billing invoice date as the "shipped" date for factory letters on military Schofields. Civilian/commercial shipments are in the shipping records at the factory showing which distributor received the gun(s). There are records in the archives at Springfield Armory listing the crate numbers and the guns in them, by serial number. Springfield Research Service has published records of Schofields, by date and serial number, listed in inventories of various US Army & militia units, usually whenever a change of command required an incoming CO to sign off for responsibility for small arms issued to the unit. Charlie Pate has collected data on Schofields for some time, preparatory to authoring a book someday.
Ser. # Invoice date

George Schofield is known to have gifted several Schofields to fellow officers & VIPs, however their serial numbers are unknown at this time and it is believed they were military guns he paid for from the Armory shipments. 1st model commercial guns are very few and their serial numbers have not been revealed. I would assume they contain rejected parts with military inspector stamps, so collectors that have these guns may be assuming they are military guns w/o the US stamp. A letter request on such a gun might reveal a pleasant surprise! Ed.

Anybody have a lettered first model civilian/commercial Schofield ? Ed. ( Roy Jinks once told me he had seen a 1st Model civilian Schofield at a gun show to which some one had added a fake US stamp ! )
