Welcome to the forum.

I think you have a 38 Double Action 3rd Model and the 5 in the last patent date is actually a 3. Manufactured from 1884-1895 serial numbered from 119001 to 322700 (per SCSW3). You can post a picture here if you want to. Here's how...

Would be a heckuva first picture to post.

Yes, that is a S&W .38 Double Action 3rd Model. As pace40 stated the Mfg. dates were 1884 to 1895. I would guess yours was in the 1886-1887 range, but only S&W know for sure. From what I can see, the condition would put it in the VG to possibly "Fine" range and value would range in the $150 to $300 area, depending on the full condition, mechanics, bore, chambers, etc. Since you inherited it, you should document it's past history. All depending, you may have a real family keepsake. If in solid condition (checked by a qualified gunsmith), these old guns are fun to shoot with mild loads. Be sure to note this is a .38 S&W, NOT an .38 Special. These are two different calibers.

Thanks for the help. I'm not interested in selling it but wanted to know how much to insure it for. It is in fine shape, although I have not used it yet. I did buy a box of .38 S&W. Am I safe to assume that any factory load will be safe?
