It stands for U.S. Express. They were a courier just like American Express, Wells-Fargo, etc.

S&W Old Russian 3, Ludwig Loewe?
Hi Guys
I´m from Estonia and I´m new in here
I have this little piece I need a little bit of information about. This is probably Old Russian 3, made in Germany for Russian "tsar´s" cavalry (?). Is it possible?
It has text in russian language on line of sight:"Ludwig Loewe and Co Berlin" It has also markings B in russian many places (you can see them on pictures). Near back sight you can see in russian L and separately in the ring marked P (also in russian) - picture S&W007.
Serial number is 3286 (if it is serial number?)
I took this gun to gunsmith and he said that all parts are original and made from exactly the same material (I had my doubts about cylinder and that extra ring under the barrel.) Does anyone have any information about the purpose of that ring? I haven´t seen any similar revolvers(extra ring and that type of cylinder) anywhere and I´ve searched for some time now.
More pictures You can see here: Album.ee

Wouldn't you love to know everything about it.
Sorry I can't help - never seen one before.

YES, of corse I would like to know everything possiblke about this piece. I´ve had searched for information in my homeland but not succeeded, that´s why I do not hope very much very quickly. If anyone knows all about this weapon I´ll be more than happy and thankful
I made a new thread about it, it is easier for me because I´m not very familiar moving in this forum Yet

Your revolver is like the Smith & Wessons made at Ludwig Loewe - but very different. The production revolvers at LL were made with inspection guages purchased from S&W during the contracts from 1871-1878 and so were parts interchangable with the revolvers made in America at Springfield.
Your revolver is a 5 shot and the production pieces are 6 shot. The cylinder is unfluted, and there is an extra lanyard piece on the barrel. Some of the inspection marks are very like the Russian contract revolvers. I will resize some images of some LL production revolvers and post so you can see the differences.

38 Single Action 2nd model, estimated that it was made in 1881. Barrel has been shortened, but the numbers all match. I'm going to letter it when my 38 hammerless arrives this week.

Found rusted SW gun
I recently found this SW revolver when the water level dropped in a lake. Can anyone tell me the model number and approximate age. Is it possible to clean up a gun in this poor condition?

I use Magtech 32SW ammo in my 32's that are tight enough to handle regular ammo.

These are my 3 examples of .38 breaktops. All three were fired last weekend at my buddies in crockett, TX, using handloaded b.p. cartridges. They still shoot great!
The second pic is my wife shooting the single action.

.44 Russian 1st model double action, sent off to Jinks for a letter, can't wait to see where it was shipped to.

Looking through this thread again, it occurred to me that I have never posted pictures of my US Army issued 1st model American here since I got it back repaired earlier this year. Although I have not test fired it, it was tested and checks out by the gunsmith.
Serial number 10xx, it was part of the 800 blued Americans delivered to the Springfield armory in 1871. Note the vent hole which was not on the later production models. All original parts with matching assembly numbers.
Passed down from my father's father who probably got it in trade from Saskatchewan Indians he rented homes to in the early 20th century. Wish I knew more.

I own a few top breaks, but this is the only one I currently have a picture for. It is a 38 Safety Hammerless 1st Model. Shipped during the first month of production, January 1887.

S&W TOPBREAK 38 WITH AM. EXP. CO. BACKSTRAP
Have one in 465xxx range with backstrap # 1465. I bought this over 40 years ago from the second owner. Thus I have the name of the original owner who worked for American Express Co. at Waco, Texas. Most unusual to get that kind of provenance. Factory letter confirms the basics and shipped to Wm. Read & Son at Boston, MA 5/7/1904.

I been wanting to start a small collection of Top Break revolvers for years. So much good info here,
I finally started today with my first one.
It's a first model 32, Safety Hammerless serial # 40xxx.
Got it from a shop a couple towns over. Hope I didn't do to bad at $225 out the door. Also came with a nice little fleece lined zipper case.

A handsome collection. I have also started collecting these historic S&W steel works of art arms and will purchase one every chance I can. My first was a 1903 hammerless, breakdown in 85% nickel and as new in its workings. Very accurate as well. Hope I can do a third as well as you. Happy collecting

Francois,
That's what I do…I make beautiful images. I have photographed most of the guns in the NRA Museum for their use and publication. These compositions are my own creations from various images of each gun. I use professional lighting and Photoshop the Composites.

H M Pope Pistols
While not as pretty as most of the guns on this site, here are my two H M Pope pistols. Both have been modified by him besides just the barrels, he said whenever he modified the whole gun, he always added a trigger stop. The top is 1st Model of 91 single shot with the stop, knurled trigger, barrel in .22 short, & very light trigger pull. The bottom is 3rd Model Perfected with the stop, barrel, & lead weight added inside grips.

Hi Don. You're right, Terry is too much modest and his photographic job is really outstanding.
Bravo Terry...
