Hello Friends,

Just a little research...

I have been wondering at what serial number break did the S&W TRADEMARK roll stamp start on the Single Shot 1st Models and the .38 Single Action Third Model that share the same frame. This is the one located on the right side of the frame. Serial number 15196 ,and (edited few) before, do not have the trademark stamping. Serial number 15307 does.

Do you have a 1st model single shot or third model single action that falls within these numbers and is it marked or not?
*** Edited new information ***
*** About three have been seen in the 10,000 to 11,000 range with the rollstamp *** One in the 8500 range ***
*** Two in the 10,000 range that have the Trademark Stamped, Number 10,382 has the Trademark and 10,874 Mexican Model shipped 10-31-1902 also is marked. Many numbers after these two were shipped a great number of years earlier. Number 19060 shipped 6-16-1900

Thank you guys ahead of time for looking and advising us of your findings. It is not known for sure if the rollstamp was started at a certain serial number. Some may have been marked and others not. So, be sure to report to us your number and if it has the rollstamp or not. If you do not wish to post your serial number then please contact me by email.

I am runnuing a data base of all serial numbers known to exist so let me know what numbers you have.

Also, does anyone have a serial number higher than the 28,107 listed in the 1857-1945 book?

Terry,

I have #15478, a .22 with 6" barrel and blue finish, and it appears from the cruddy photo I have on my guntracker program that I have on my thumb drive, that it DOES have the roll stamp. The next time I dig it out, I will look for sure, and if it doesn't have the stamp, I will let you know.

We now are a little closer thanks to Peter. The serial number 15196 does NOT have the S&W Trademark roll stamped into the right side of the frame. Serial number 15348 DOES have the stamp.
Does anyone have a First Model Single Shot or 3rd Model Single Action .38 revolver within the serial numbers 15196 and 15307?

Terry,
I know it does not fall in your number range but SS #153436 has the roll mark on the right side. I hope this helps.

Good time to bring this post back!
I have found a few frames in the 10,000 serial number range with the rollstamp on the right side of the frame. This marking is mostly found on the frames after serial number 15,300.

Why would this be?

Hello Terry
Here is a second series single shot Transitional gun. It has serial number 21966 and it shipped in February 1904 almost a full year prior to the second series being available. It has the S&W Trade mark stamp that can be seen in Number Two & Number four picture here. It came to me with the 6" acessory barrel on it Unserial numbered. Thank's to you, I now have the correct serial numbered locking latch that it left the factory with in February 1904. I have since added a 8" .32 S&W caliber barrel to it as well as a 10" Olympic chamber barrel shown with it below Regards, Hammerdown

You should start a new thread on 1st model serial numbered SS with the 2nd Model type ( non recoil shield ) frames.

Would be interesting to know how many are out there and the range in serial numbers.

Hi; I have been a member for a while but have not been active at all since joining. I am hoping to change that. This is an old thread, so I don't know if the research is still an ongoing thing. A few months ago I came into possesion of a Model of 91 3rd. model, SA .38 . It is a blue 3&1/4 inch barrel w/ pearl grips. I do not think the pearl grips came on the gun. I will try to contact the original poster by email if I can.I hope to visit this forum more from now on. Tom

Terry,

The Model 1891 SA has always intiriged me. There are very few in the SWCA Database and they seldom come up for sale. I currently have a Target 38 Third Model that has serial number 24620, with S&W logo on frame, that was shipped in April 1907.

I have pictures of the revolver in a Commentary I did last year. Why is the 38 Smith & Wesson Single Action, 3rd Model (Model of 1891) So Scarce? - Smith & Wesson Forum

I would appreciate any data on these revolvers that you come up with, and it would be good to make sure they end up in the Smith & Wesson Collector's Association database. As I remember, there are less than 20 currently in the database.

David Carrol has serial 15307 that HAS the trademark on the right side of the frame. The earlier number 15196 is not stamped.

Still strange that only a few frames were roll stamped in the early 10,000 range.

I missed out on a Model 91 revolver a little over a year ago, and I have been kicking myself ever since. One of the best looking revolvers S&W ever built.
