I don't think there is any S&W that you have to remove the hinge pin to detach the cylinder.

Aha! You're correct: There's an "Extractor catch" under the extended extractor housing which is part of the barrel, and distinguishes the 1st Model from the 2nd Model. This is hinged on a pin, and pushing the front part releases the the extractor, and thus the cylinder. A very fiddly design, I can see why they changed it.
Removing the hinge pin didn't make sense to me either.
