Default Victory Model, Maybe?

Hi guys,

My buddy came up with this. What do we have, and what's it worth?

Everything says Victory except for the serial #. The number on this one starts 9870xx.
All three numbers match and is in pretty good shape.

Thanks,
Bob

If it doesn't start with a V, then it isn't a Victory Model. I don't understand your confusion. It's simply an M&P aquired by the British prior to the pre-war serial numbers reaching the first one million.

Thanks for the info.

I must be reading the "book" wrong. Acording to the listing on page the serial number falls in the 1940-1945 catagory.

Is there any significance to this?

I agree with cgt4570 Looks like a refinish. Without a "V" in the serial number it is not a Victory. What caliber is it? Remember, at the begining of the war a call went out for Arms donations for Briton. Many private citezens sent guns in response. Yours looks like it was refinished to look like a Victory. Watch out of fakes.

The gun is a 38 Special. I don't think it has been refinished. The pics do not represent the actual color of the finish.

There are a number of machining marks in the metal as well. The frame has some very distinct cutter marks.

I could still use a ballpark value.

Little hard to say since you comment that the pics don't represent the actual color. From the pics, looks like an early 1940's M&P 4th that's about in the white(no finish). Refinished Victorty grips and post war ejector rod. Ejector rod, screws, lanyard ring and cylinder release(could be post war?) still blue indicating it was taken apart and worked over. The hammer and trigger still being proper case colored says disassembled and worked over to me also. YMMV.

Value, very little.

It may well have been a gun that was donated to the war action during that period but I agree that with no V in the serial number it's not a victory. Being a 38 special in this case helps the value and I would guess with that finish about $200 or slightly less. If it locks up tight and the barrel has no pitts and strong rifling then I'd say $200.
