Default Not Too Bad . . . .

Not too shabby for $250 OTD.
Four screw, non original grips, a few blemishes,
barrel and cylinder beginning to "plum out,"
which I actually like. Very tight lock-up, excellent
1950s S&W trigger pull. I like it!

I'm on a roll finding S&W revolvers, but it's keeping
me broke!

Great find!

Unfortunately though, factory blued cyls don't "plum out". It's been reblued and the plum cyl is a common result when the bluing salts were a little old.

Yes, they do! Has nothing to do with being re-finished but the higher Nickel content of the steel used n both the barrels and cylinders! It becomes more obvious with age.

Doesn't necessarily mean OPs gun hasn't been re-finished, but you cannot base this on the "plumming" of the barrel or cylinder. Didn't it ever occur to you as being strange that if this had anything to do with being re-blued why it was always the barrel & cylinder that turned??????

Well you and others may have seen more Smiths than I, and all I can say is I've never seen any factory finished Smiths turn plum.

Did it ever occur to you or haven't you ever seen a plum frame not "always" the barrel or cylinder? I've seen just as many plum frames but only refinished frames, barrels or cylinders.

Not the best photos but the frame is plum and only the frame on this refinish:

Another picture. Hammer, and especially trigger, show case hardening.
Trademark and such appear fairly sharp. I'm no
expert, so I'll defer to those more knowledgable than I. Even
if it is a refin, I'm still well pleased. I bought it as a shooter and
"stash back in the corner" gun, and it will serve me well.

Looks original to me. The edges are too sharp on the S&W emblem to be a refinish. You can still see the slightly curled/raised edges of the stamp. That goes away with a buff and refinish. (Unless it was restamped, which I kinda doubt in this situation.) Tight sideplate line, sharp corners and edges of flutes. My opinion is it's an original finish.

All we have to do is look at an early model 10 to see how it used to be-nice snag Wilfred!

Wouldn't most refinished guns have the frames and the parts done at the same time? Why risk two different bluing dips not coming out right?

On factory stuff its a lot more mass produced so i could see it being done separately. Never saw a gun that both the frame and parts were plum.

Sorry OP for the thread drift

Pristine is nice to look at, but I really like a gun that can be used with no worries. Most of my guns fall into that same category, really nice shooters.

And that's a rare price nowadays.

That was a good score!
