trying to identify my Smith PLEASE HELP!!
Hello all,
I bought my 1st Smith today a 38 I found it at a yard sale and got it and a box of shells for a pretty good price. I have always hunted and owned rifles and shotguns but havent shot pistols very much after shooting it a few times I loved it. I was hopeing someone would know when it was made I have tried to look for info but just cant figure it out.The gun has 5screw if you count the one in the front of the trigger guard it has a number on the butt 904xxx the number is also on the cylinder and under the barrel it also has a couple other symbols under the barrel there is a number under the grip on the left side Ithink it is s5 this number is also on the frame when you open the cylinder along with the numbers 46 624. the grips appear to be plastic but they do have SW-Mp/mg on the inside and also 261a-s.I hope this info can help someone help me to identify the age. Any help woud be appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian

If it marked 38 special, I suspect it is a pre-M10, the M&P. Not sure about when it was made, don't have my books with me.

Looks like a Military & Police Model from the very late 1930s. This model was designated the Model 10 in 1957 when numbers were assigned. This is a K frame revolver. The stocks are inexpensive plastic replacements.

There were several .38 Special M&Ps with numbers in the early 900000s shipped in the first quarter of 1942. Yours is a nickeled gun, right? In the photos I can't quite tell if the hammer and trigger are also nickeled. If so, that's evidence of a refinishing at some point, as these parts were not nickeled at time of shipping. The number 46624 would be an assembly control number; you should also see it inside the side plate if you ever take that off (not that I am encouraging you to do that).
These are great shooters, and I'm glad you like the experience.

You might get us a better picture of the barrel. From what I see, the
front sight is not factory, but something added to the gun. It seems to
have a piece that extends down the top of the barrel.
If you can get some larger pictures, and don't know how to post them,
email them to me - [email protected] - and I'll post them for you.
Later, Mike Priwer
