Old style aftermarket grip ID
Hi all, need some help identifieing these grips. found this nice late 1905 4th but since it was reblued with poorly fitted late magna's, I figure its not worth finding the correct grips for it. Found these grips on the cheap, definitly not S&W grips, but they look rather nice on the revolver. Anyone have any idea who may have made these grips. No markings at all on the grips, maybe Spanish? My thanks in advance!

The emblems are the small flat silver factory S&W pre war emblems used on the I and K frame guns. The checkering looks like it was done well. Its hard to say I have never seen anything like these before but that doesnt mean someone wasnt making them way back when. They could also be factory grips that someone sanded then checkered themsleves or had a gunsmith checker them....Would love to see a pic of the back of them and see how the emblems attach. The screw escutchens even look factory though the screw does not.

A very attractive package with two exceptions, the hammer and trigger. Send them out for CC and you will be amazed at the difference it makes. The grips though unusual are very nice and appear to fit quite well. Blue hammer and trigger no points there.

Bob; I am fairly certain that the grips shown in the photo were originally on one of the thousands of "Victory Models" converted by the British firm of Harrison and Cogswell after World War Two.
The great majority of these guns were sold here in the U.S.,mostly by mail order from various dealers.
Most of these guns had either the smooth as issued Victory wood grips, or cheap plastic aftermarket grips. Most were converted to fire .38 Special and some had the 5" bbls. cut down to make a "snubby".
A "few" 6" bbl. "pre Victories", were sleeved to fire .22 lr. in the cyl and bbl., and had aftermarket adjustable sights added by the H & C company, and it was on a couple of these I have seen, that the type of grips you have were present. Don't know if H&C checkered and added the S&W medallions, or if H&C bought them from a supplier?
Hope this helps.

I'd say you hit it right on the head Bud.
AA Auction 9353194 (Ended 10/09/2009, 19:19:43 PST) Victory (Cogswell & Harrison) .38 NO RESERVE!!
Looks like the same grips less the medallions to my old eyes.

http://forums.gunboards.com/showthread.php?p=252787 see post #13 appears P-H used the medallions with there grips.

Thanks for the info fella's! I think Lonewolf got it and I checked the post by D R Greysun and they sure look like them. When I get my hands on the camera again I will post a pic of the back of the grips. Whoever reblued this gun did a good job, all lettering and such is crisp, why the reblued hammer and trigger I dont know. I also have a nice post war five screw five inch M&P with the same thing. I may have to check on a cc job for the hammer and trigger on this one as it's a great shooter as well.

They are a British copy of Colt grips for the S&W. I have several sets and have never seen a set with the medallion installed. I rather like the way they look like that. A proper set will have Colt inserts and screw.

Hi all, well I got the camera back and here is some pic's of the back of them. The observation about the Colt style was a good one, I knew there was something familiar looking about them but did not make the connection. Again, my thanks to all for the input.
