Default 1st Model Triple Lock Question

Take a look at these pics. Is it my ignorance showing or don't the grip panels match? One has a medallion and the other doesn't. They aren't supposed to be this way....are they?

Of course not. The one with the medallion is 1930 to 1940. The
other is 1920 to 1930.

Otherwise, its a very nice-looking gun. It's so nice that it's almost
too nice. I have to wonder about such an apparently nice finish
with two completely wrong grips.

Do you know anything about the gun ? Does it letter as a target ?

Mike,
It's so nice because it's a factory re-blue from the 1940's
Is the gun supposed to have some lettering on the right side of the barrel or is it supposed to be blank?
It has the caliber marking on the left side of the barrel and patent info on the top.

Yeah its very nice! Factory refinished guns from that period usually are very well done! Tell us more, did you get it, how much? Very nice...

I would think that this gun should have the dished out non medallion stocks or those with gold medallions as a first model. I would also think that the backstrap would be smooth. I wonder if the grooves were added in 3/48 when the gun was sent back to the factory and the refinish done?

S&W was famous for upgrading older guns that went back for repair. Roy has even stated that roll marks were changed or added to bring a gun into current status. Again, they thought of it as a tool and not a collectible.

Reminds me of the story that I heard as a boy vacationing in Maine. The old farmer said "yep, that thar axe has been in my family for over 300 years. Only had to change the head twice and the handle three times"

Thanks for the info on the reblue. It just looked too good , to me.

The sight configuration is what I was wondering about, and the reason
I asked about a factor letter.

Apparently this gun is in an auction ? Can someone post the
auction company, or send me a link to it ?

I doubt it will letter as a target, although there is an outside chance.

That rear sight leaf, as someone noted yesterday, is many years too
late for the gun. At least 10 years, maybe 15 years. My guess is
that they were installed in 1948, along with a probably refinish.

One rarely sees a triplelock with a patridge blade, which is another
reason why I think the sights were installed much later.

The only other possibility is that the gun was shipped with the
much-earlier single-screw rear sight leaf, and then updated in 1948
to the most-recent pre-WW2 sight leaf. The earlier rear sight leafs
did not have any locking mechanism, and so could come out of
adjustment during prolonged shooting.

My bet is that it was shipped with an M&P sight configuration.

It would be interesting if the owner would remove the rear sight
leaf, and see if it is numbered to the gun. Even that would not
confirm the original configuration. Only a letter will do that.

LC,
I even went a bit higher than I really wanted to and still got beat out.
I was actually kinda glad at the time....started thinking about all of those "wrong" features and adding up what it would cost for a decent set of right grips for it. Besides I gotta nother deal workin on somthin better!
Mike B..that wasn't u who won it was it??
I think the guy's initials were "MB"
