Default .38-44 HD and Outdoorsman

Well, I just got a shipping date back from Roy and have learned that both of my .38-44's were shipped in August of 1946. The first is an Outdoorsman that came from Colorado, S 69847 and the second is an HD that came from Florida, S 67706.

I find it interesting that two guns purchased five years apart and from different parts of the country happened to be shipped the same month and year. These two .38-44's are 2000 guns apart yet shipped the same time. I may have to letter them to see if they went out the same day.

I am VERY interested in Outdoorsman S 69847 !

If available I would love to see several photos of your gun !

Photos of the barrel from sides and top are of special interest !

Best Regards,

Hi James,

Just thought I'd share some information with you.

My 4" Heavy Duty, #S64082 was shipped in July 1946. It came to me in a prewar picture box numbered, not to my gun, but to S64192.

My Outdoorsman, #S70364 was shipped in November 1946.

Both guns are in 99+% condition.

A little while ago you mentioned your reluctance to post any further comments following a "correction'. Good to see you are still active because I look for your articulate and well considered posts. I have made some mistakes in posting comments about matters that I have not been fully informed about, and I may have insulted Curtis, which was not my intention.

I am 8,500 miles away from the nearest U.S. member, never talk to another S&W collector (except when I visit the U.S.) and so I've learned that I can only comment on a limited number of subjects

James,
Just to add to your thread, Chuck Odom and I both have 5 screw pre-29's that shipped on January 11 1957 and they are about 6000 numbers apart

It is pretty obvious that S&W was shipping a lot of guns fast during that time frame. From the earliest serial number in the S62000 range in July 46 to S70311 38/44 Outdoorsman in Sep 46 is a lot of guns!

Jerry,

I would very much love to help you but I have not yet mastered the photo thing. My original digital camera had a chip that I could remove and put into my HP printer and then do things with. Unfortunately, that camera has gone the way of the dodo bird and the 2 or 3 that the bride has purchased since are "hands off."

I will see if I can persuade her to take some photos for me and then figure some way to upload them.

In the meantime, can I tell you anything about the gun? Would that help? Please let me know.

Best regards,

Frank,

Thank you for the encouraging words. I was going through some issues with my moms health and was feeling a little low at the time. I really love trying to help those with questions, but I sometimes take what is written as the absolute and don't factor that we are talking about S&W and as we have all learned, nothing is absolute with them.

I have been a member of this forum since 2000 but never posted much as my time was filled using the original Joe Miller site and then the SWCA site. Since the merge, it is much easier to float back and forth and I really look forward to getting to my computer each night after work. Any time you desire a S&W chat, please feel free to post, PM me or send me a private email. I love talking about my guns and enjoy learning and hearing about everyone elses.

Best regards,

Jim:

If you can talk the bride into taking a few close-up photos just email them to me. I can post them here if anyone else expresses interest in seeing them. I would really like to see your gun !

The transitional Outdoorsman model is one of my very favorites and I own a couple of the earlier examples such as yours.

Jerry
