Default Livin on Tulsa Time - Tulsa Gun Show Finds

Can't get Clapton's version of that song outta my head! I just got back late on Monday night. Quite a drive for me but well worth it!
Got to meet a lot of the people from the forum there. Nice folks, VERY knowledgeable, and very willing to help with all my silly questions!
Thought I'd post somma the stuff I got there.
Lets start with the most pristine 4" K-38 Combat Masterpiece (Pre-Model 15) I've ever come across!
(and yes, I STOLE it!)

I especially like the grips which are of course #'d to the gun

I missed a proper, (but beat up), Labeled Gold box that was correct for this gun by about an hour the day after I bought it.
Thanks to Dave P for letting me know where it was. I was just a bit too late!
More to come...Later!

Nice to meet and talk with you. Glad you liked the Tulsa show and hope to see you there again and at the Saturday night barbecue with the "SW Bunch".

Thanks Bill!
It was real nice to finally meet you face to face as well.
I want to thank you again for all of the kindness you have shown me and the expertise you have shared with me.
You do the SWCA very proud!
I look forward to becoming a member of an organization whose members and officers exhibit the attributes that I've seen from all that I have met and communicated with so far.
So, with that said...MORE Tulsa Time!
This one is at least 99%. There are a few TINY pin prick size "freckles" on the left side of the frame under the cylinder. I could probably remove them easily enough but I like her the way she is.
I walked all over the show looking for one like it and managed to find several.
I actually bought her older Sister from Manny before I found this one. (pics and story on it later)
After many hours of searching, sore feet and legs, and much unsuccessful "Hoss Trading".....
I found this one, one row of tables directly behind where we were set up! How could I have missed it!
It's a 29 no-dash 4- screw w/ 4" barrel, Serial # S-1933XX Made in 1959 ( according to SCOSW/ Supica/ Nahas)
and yes...I stole this one too!

Notice the lack of any significant wear on the recoil shield

LOVE them "Cokes"

The guy I bought it from said that he bought it new way back when. I asked if it had ever been "monkey'd with" and he said no. I of course I checked the frame for re-blue marks anyway and there were none present. All the markings on the gun are absolutely crisp and clear.
He included the box, tools and papers pictured below. I didn't think they were proper for the gun but he says he bought it this way. (Should be a black Presentation box w' Blue Satin liner, knurled silver screwdriver etc...No?)
He's an older Gentleman and I wasn't going to argue with him especially for the price he was asking. It was such a bargain that I just handed him the cash!

Comments and "Expert" opinions please??

Default Cases

The case you have pictured was used in the 1976-1978 time frame! Depending on when your gun was shipped it could have a period correct case of 3 different types!

A black case!

A transistion case. Uses the Mahogany box with the black case internals!

The "clam shell" which started being used in 1960.

All of the above case are hard to find and can be expensive!

Default Box and tools

IIRC the box and tools for a 29 look like what you have, but I cant see the inside of the lid. I believe the case should be a full clamshell with impressions in the lid for the gun and tools. The screwdriver would be of the fluted chisel point type, not the later hollow ground variety.

BTW
In case you didnt see the thread I picked up a treasure in Tulsa too

Didnt steal it, but I am very happy with the deal and I wouldnt take twice what I paid

Thanks Guy's!
The top of the case is not a "Clam Shell"
As I said I suspected the box was wrong when I got it but for what I paid it was a steal without any box at all.
Maybe I'll re-line it with some foam and blue satin!
That way I could call it a "Historically Correct Restoration"

Nice guns Tom. What I find fascinating is the Walnut Cokes.

Tom,

Please don't mess with that case. It's very nice and worth at least 100.00 like it is. Sell it and buy what you need or better yet, find a nice 29-2 and put it in there. Relining is for old worn out cases.

Many

Once again....THANKS MANY! (or is it MANY THANKS! Hmmmm interesting play on words)
I feel like I owe you big time for all of the knowledge you've shared with me over the past week.
Maybe I can return the favor some day.
VM...The "Cokes" aren't Walnut but are very dark Goncalo Alvez, as they should be. It's hard to see the stripes in them in my somewhat ****** pics but it's the best my little camera can do until I get some better lighting.
I've noticed that everything I try to shoot under the florescent lights in my shop turns out dark and kinda blue. If I use the flash it's even worse!
I've been meaning to go buy some decent white lights to shoot under, but I haven't had time since returning from Tulsa. Too busy shipping guns I sold at, during, before and after the show. November is of course my busiest time of year, but I LOVE it!!

If you are using a digital cam, it probably has a setting for the PARTICULAR type of light- fluo, tungsten, etc. Makes a HUGE difference in color accuracy.

Thanks Lee, I'll 'prolly have ta break down and actually READ the instruction manual some day
BTW Nice to hear from you in one of my posts! I've actually bought a couple guns from you over the net in the past few years that I've been VERY impressed with...especially for what I paid!
If U get time please take a look at my "Please Help with a Pre-27" thread. I'd be really interested to know your thoughts on this gun.
I bumped it to the top of the 1896-1961 section so you wouldn't have to dig for it.

Convinced my friend from back east to come. He couldn't beleive it. He picked up an early pinned and recessed model 19 unfired in the box with the paperwork and cleaning kit unopened. He also picked up a pre 17 4 screw. gun rates 97% and am looking for the correct box. The gun dates to 1956 and my question is when did they change from gold to blue boxes. I have a pre 16 4 screw in a gold box.

More "Tulsa Time".....
Lets call this one the "many thanks...Many" Gun
I'd heard about this guy in some threads here before I went to Tulsa and he was one of a group of three of the first SWCA guys I got to meet there on Friday. Steve and Lee were the other two in the group but more on that later.
I started asking these three guys all kinds of questions when I first met them and actually bought a gun off Steve at that time. (That's another good story that I'll tell w/ pics of said gun later)
Many's a really nice guy. Very gregarious and outgoing. He answered a lot of my questions with a great deal of enthusiasm and didn't make me feel like an idiot for asking them. Needless to say we hit it off pretty good.
Later that day we made a deal on this beautiful old Gal....She's a 4-screw, 4 inch, Pre-29 with the 3 T's, R/R,W/O, and a nice old set of Goncalo-Alvez "Cokes"

Notice the lack of any significant wear on the recoil shield

We did a little "Hoss Tradin" on this one but I think Many was pretty darn fair with me.
many Thanks...Many!!

OK,
Here's the last one I think I can legitimately post in the 1896-1961 thread category without gettin reprimanded by the moderators....
I was walkin back to our tables late Saturday afternoon to take a rest. I musta already walked 5 or 6 miles on both Friday and Saturday by this time and was and was REALLY draggin aXX.
I passed by a table about 4 rows down from ours and this little baby caught my eye.
She's a 4" 5-screw K-22 made in 1953. She shows some significant holster wear, but her bore, chambers, lock-up and timing are PERFECT! She also wears here ORIGINAL serial #'d Diamond Magna's.

The guy behind the table had a very reasonable price on her. We did a little "Hoss Tradin" and I ended up with another absolute STEAL from this show! She ended up costin a bit less than the $375.00 the guy had on her.
I bought her strictly as a shooter.
I've already got a few 5-screw K-22's but they are 6 inchers and a bit to pristine to be everyday plinkers.
I won't feel bad about takin this one to Deer Camp and lettin my buddies blast away at beer cans with her in our annual "off hand" Plikin contest. I can finally prove to them what they've been missin by not havin a REALLY good old .22 revolver like a Smith to shoot!
