K-22 DOB and value question for possible purchase tomorrow
Good evening,
Today at the gun show I handled a beautiful K-22 four-inch revolver that is in probably 99% condition. The grips are serialized to the gun and I could see no flaws anywhere. The scratch line on the cylinder is very faint and there are no rub lines on the hammer or trigger. The front sight is pinned in place with two tiny pins. Unfortunately, there is no box or paperwork. The gentleman wanted $600 for it.
Good deal or no?
The serial number is 1977XX.
I may lose sleep tonight deciding whether or not to buy this... I would prefer a six-inch, but I know that gun like this will only appreciate in value, and in years to come I may forget about the $600, but I'll still hold a beautiful revolver.

Hi, you are describing a K-22 Combat Masterpiece, 1953 production by the serial number, which is the 4" version of the K-22. The price is in line with current market values, but a few dollars higher than current reference books will state. Of course, if you want it badly enough, it's "worth the money" and will only go up in value with proper care. Hope this is helpful, and please post a photo if you buy it.

For what it's worth Murphydog, I would snatch it up! A run of the mill 18 is bringing five to five and a half around here and a Combat Masterpiece of that vintage is a go in my book! Let us know how you made out for sure.

My vote is to go back and get it if it is still available. Even if you would prefer a six-inch barrel, K-22s are marvelous guns and you may find that this one satisfies your needs. If you would still like a six-inch barrel, this is a good place to park your money while you are waiting for the other one to show up. I have no doubt that a lot of people on this forum would be willing to buy your four-inch gun at the price you paid or maybe a few bucks more.
There is probably someplace in the country where the same model in the same condition could be bought more cheaply, but there is also another place where it would be sold more dearly. In general, my impression is that five-screw K-22s in high-90s condition have been selling for $500-600 for most of the last year, and sometimes for a little more. I think it is safe to buy this one.

From what I've seen you post you already seem knowledgeable enough to have gladly paid the $600 for a K-22 in that condition.
IMHO the 4 inch guns in that condition are MUCH tougher to find than the 6 inch guns.

Whenever possible,I always like to give a gun a second look over with fresh eyes.Amazing what I might have missed on my first exam.Condition confirmed, I'd hand over the loot asap.A nice four inch K22 is very desirable.
