1917 Snubbie
All numbers match on revolver, it went back to S&W in 1948 for some sort of service as it has star next to serial number on butt and '48 date on grip frame.
I like the 3 1/2" barrel modification, but wish it hadn't been nickeled ...... still a cool Snub-nose for 90 years old!
Mechanics are excellent.

Mike did it go back to the factory for the refinish and the nose-job? The markings on the barrel are centered so I assume that's the "some sort of service".
The grips look good, grip adapter, swivel... come on man, nickle or not wouldn't that be a GREAT concealed carry piece!?! ( four-dee-five and six for sure reload)
Very Cool revolver.

Thanks Gail..............the nickel looks decent in pictures (because I took 30 pictures ) but it is an inferior job. I highly doubt the Factory did the finish change...... the S&W logo is gone.
As far as the barrel mod.............it's an excellent job but my curiosity is not great enough to buy a letter.
I'm assuming something mechanical ??
The grips are the only thing that do not match with proper serial number.
It is a cool revolver and I like it!

There is no letter for repairs. I suspect it was reblued in 1948 and then cut up and nickeled in the 1960s.

Sort of the Glock 30 of an entirely different era. What a neat old belly gun.

Well since I saw it in person, I can say it is a really neat old 1917. If you had not bought it I probably would have. Let me know how you like it after shooting it.

VM
I just found my donor after looking for the last three years.
It is just screwed up enough that I can bring myself to do the mods.
It would be a really big favor to me if you could post a flat side shot.
I think yours may be just right on the barrel length.
Great full bore snubby!

Nice looking 1917 S&W Mike! I think the nickel adds to the cool factor.
I like 1917 snub guns. Of course mine is a Colt...except for the S&W rear sight.

Mike, that'd certainly make a nice winter time carry gun.
C&L, I've always liked yours with the matte finish.
I recall a local gunsmith some years ago that cut down a couple big-bore Colt's for some federal narcotics guys to carry. Heckuva handful!

Somehow, I had a feeling that C&L's 1917 snubbie was going to get into a thread with that title. Both are VERY nice guns.

I know, I know probably post it too many times. But, any excuse works to post a picture.

I have a 1917 Colt that was poorly refinished long ago. I was going to sell it, but found no interest - I think it would make a great snubbie!
Have to start saving my dollars......

This is what matters most. Congratulations. I like these also.
I am having this done to one that had a damaged barrel. It is being re-blued and should be almost completed. I plan to put the old diamond magnas I got from you on it.

Great thread!
Here's mine. It's kinda like having a 427 in a Chevy Nova.

These didn't have the logo on the sideplate. Nickle looks good from here.

N-frames with 2-1/2 inch to 3-1/2 inch barrels are cool, at least in part because (in my limited experience) they are hard to shoot well. Takes a lot of skill to manage big rounds from a short tube.
.45 N-frames with barrels in that range are maybe the coolest of the cool.
Nice modded 1917; shoot it in good health.

A snub 1917 is at the top of my want list. I'd stoke it with .45 auto rim Corbon 160 gr DPX and not look back

I want one real bad as well. I have a Brazilian, but I don't know if I should chop it or not. Why does the 325 have to be so expensive?
