Default Model of 1917

I found a 1917 .45 caliber revolver. The gun has been refinished and the refinishing is not bad. The gun does not have the original grips but it does have the swivel. The finish on the gun is more black than blue. There are still visible markings indicating U. S. Property etc.. The stocks appear to be aftermarket checkered walnut. Can someone give me an idea of the value of this gun? Thanks very much.

Default 1917

If you can get it for $350.-$375. Bye it cause from this years price relized from Auctions are much much higher and thats for refinished guns w/o period correct grips. S&W 1917 were blue not black that I know of. But there one hell of a shooting handgun. good luck with your shearch for a 1917 there's still alot of them out there.

I doubt you will get it for under $400. $500 is probably more the rock-bottom price. If it was a really good refinish with all original markings intact, it will go up from there, IMHO.

OK guys I just joined and need some help. I may not be at the correct location so if I am not please advise.
I have a S&W Model 1917 serial #150xxx, has the concentric groove on hammer, 4 screws right side, front sight integral, butt plate w/serial # US Army plate... grips are checkered wood square (no lanyard ring), everything appears as does pictures of those posted on this page. ONE Exception being mine is not blued but nickel plated? Any information would be appreciated???

Welcome to the Forum. Is that serial number taken from the butt? If so, the grooved hammer is a replacement. It was a early feature on the 1917, dropped around SN 23,000 (IIRC).

Nickel finish is aftermarket.

First, thanks for the help. I have been trying to find out something about this pistol for a long time. Just found this web. 1st the serial #is from the butt plate. Has wooden checkered grips, took the grips off and did not find a letter N as one poster suggested to look for. Markings under the barrel are very small S2? Did not find a letter B under the barrel as another poster suggested should be there? Finish is maybe 60% quality has some holster rash. Has leather holster with the pistol. Appears that the lanyard hole was worked over, you can tell it was once there but is no longer functional. Thanks again for the help.

ALO, this is a situation where pictures would really help. Can you post some that illustrate the points you have mentioned?
