Default Model 36-no dash with flat latch?

Happy New Year, all!

Last week, I saw a Model 36-no dash with a flat latch. I've never seen a flat latch on a Smith with a model number. Serial number is 285-something, putting production around 1960 (C&R!). Any idea if many of those were made? What's the story on that

The bluing on the gun is beautiful, to say the least, and it has only a slight cylinder ring. In fact, the bluing is so good that I looked it over fairly closely to see if it had been reblued. I don't think it had been. The markings were all very clean, including the four-line address on the right side of the frame.

I was so caught off guard by the flat latch that I failed to examine the grips to see if they had the diamonds. I wish that I had asked for the grips to be pulled off to see if they were serialized, matching the gun.

The dealer is asking $429, but I'm sure that price is negotiable.

Model # markings began in 1957. Flat latch was used until about 1966, diamond grips dropped around 1968. This must be the oldest one you have ever run across.

A nice, clean, used J frame will bring $300.00+ in the Atlanta area.

Default Model 36

As for how many were made, I don't even think smith & wesson knows the answer to that one, but everything Colby posted is correct, including the price range

I bought this gun in July at a local Atlanta gun store, it was tagged at $399, I walked out with it for $320. The grips number, it's a solid 98% gun. IIRC it dates to about 1963

I would think you could buy the one you posted about for about the same price + - a few bucks either way,

Thanks for the info, fellas. It's the oldest J-frame with model number that I've run across. To be honest, I haven't usually paid much attention to the J frames; however, I have that C&R FFL now!

I've got a Detective Special that I bought brand new in 1987. The additional size and extra round made it appealing.

I'm not really hankering for this Model 36. I just had assumed that the flat latches were on the pre-model number guns, so this one stood out to me.

Great pic there, GA Johnny. The one I saw looks much like yours, condition-wise.

A little off topic, is it possible to convert a modern non flat latch to a flat latch?

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass, Josh! It might have been better to start a new thread rather than resurrecting one that is 7 years old. The value is going to be hard to assess without seeing the gun. Pretty much, condition determines what it is valued at. The Standard Catalog of S&W, 4th Edition, says Exc-->$525, VG-->$450 and Good-->$300 with a premium for flat latch models.
