I have a 1917 that I inherited. finally got it cleaned up and shot it for the first time last weekend. Awesome gun. Now I didnt like the way the grips fit my hand. Can anybody tell me what type of grips I can purchase that would fit my hands better?

Just about any S&W N frame grips will fit the 1917. As much as I hate them, a set of Pachmayrs or Hogues would be good for shooting

I put a set of Eagle grips on my commercial model. I tried a couple of others, but the modern N-frame is just a little different size than the old frames. Here are pictures, before and after the new grips.

As mentioned, Hogue or Pachmyer rubber might be to your liking, and certainly economical (used $15-20). For wood, a set of N frame Target-style grips can be found on ebay or gunbroker (or the Accessories section here). N frame Magna-style grips are harder to find and if you don't like the originals, you probably won't like them either, although they are more in keeping with the gun's historical provenance. phs3194's Eagle grips are reproductions of Magna-style grips (shown above). For about $60-100 you can get some nice Ahrends, Spegel, Eagle, or Hogue grips that will fit your hand and look good too. Regardless, the correct size is 'N frame, Square Butt' for a proper fit.

These look ugly to any of my friends but perfectly fit my hand !

Tyler-T's adapters and ivory on and fit great and give's it that oldtime look I like

Thanks Everyone for the info. Now popgun the answer to you question about purchasing the grips. I am sorry but the answer is no. I want to keep them so that I can have the originals to put back on.

Yes keep them as most of do! No matter how good you refinish them there still ugly! JMHO

As phs3194 mentioned, early N frames are a bit different in size then current models, or even post war models. I have a 38/44 HD that shipped in 1931 and it came with a set of Magna style grips from the 1950s. The frame was a bit too long for that style of grips, so I'm not sure if new Hogue etc grips would work on a model 1917.

I have to agree with James56 on this issue. Before getting new grips try a Tyler's or Pachmayr grip adapter. They are period appropriate and (to me) feel better than any of the after-market grips. The Tyler's are still being manufactured in Oklahoma. The Pachmayr are sometimes available in the bargan box at gun shows or on some of the auction sites.
