Talking Range Report On Pre-27

Several weeks ago I found a pre-27 with 6.5" barrel, recessed chambers,5-screw and fitted with after market target stocks. This is my first .357 and my first M27. I now know why you guys think that these are the best of the best. I am now a full fledged addict to the M27. They were made at a time when quality still meant something and each craftsman had pride in what he was working on. In my original post I promised a range report. Here it is, handloads were 158gr LRN cast bullets over 3.4 grs of Win 231 with CCI sm pistol primers. Not a real hot load. It printed great at 12 yds in both slow fire SA and rapid fire DA. To the M27 crowd, add one more true believer.

Hey Sailor
They are nice guns aren't they. I enjoy shooting all the S&W's that I have tried.
Not a bad slow fire group. As for that rapid fire, slow down just a little and get your breathing under control.

delta-419,

I like the looks of that old magnum - especially the interesting grips. Do you have any idea where they came from?

Anyway, good shooting and glad to see you've started to experience some of the joys of the Model 27.

Regards,

Jerry

j38, the grips are marked "Italy" on the inside right grip. No name or ID. They fit really good in your hand. That thumb rest makes for an easy shooter. RdrBill, I know us sailors are not allowed to shoot them little shooters, mostly I'm use to a target at 20 miles. But, this was fun!

Keep at it. I've had three M-27's and several M-28's, the plainer-finished version. All had six or 6.5-inch barrels.

On a good day, they'd all put six touching (one ragged) hole in the bull at 25 yards standing, firing offhand.
This was usually with Remington's softpoint 158 grain .357 load. The better groups could be covered easily with a half-dollar coin.

The gun's weight helps with magnum recoil, and they are usually very accurate shooters. Certainly, you should strive to get 25 yard groups like what you achieved in the inner white bull on your top photo. You can then hunt small game, coyotes, foxes, bobcats, even small deer with your .357. It is a very versatile cartridge. Use .38 Special ammo on small edible game, of course.

If you can sit down and use a two-handed hold, accuracy will improve. This is a very useful field position, and very solid.

Are sailors, other than SEALS, even trained on the M-9 pistol these days?

P.S. I have also managed to shoot many groups with all six bullet holes cutting into one another with the M-29 .44 Magnum and a Colt New Service .45 Colt made in the mid-1930's. And the M-19 .357 with six-inch barrel is also very accurate. The Colt .45 auto, in National Match form, is even more accurate. I think. Good guns are usually more accurate than we are in firing them.

Delta, nice gun I enjoy all of mine and the weight makes the 357 mag a pussycat even with hot loads. I think you are going to find those grips to be Sile grips. I have a pair I used on my 50 target 44 Spl. when I would and could shoot it Bullseye style. My hands are large and those grips helped a great deal. Enjoy that old Smith.
