Default Is this just wrong?

I like to think I am a purest when it comes to older guns but I had to take the magnas off this pre 18 and replace with the targets. Sure does shoot better

I did the same with a Model 14-2. I took off the magnas and put on some square combat grips. It shoots like a dream.
I might have to do that with my pre-18 too. I have a pair of targets around someplace....

Hey, you have kept the old, original grips, you know which gun they came from, you didn't change anything on your sixgun permanently and you can return the original grips to it at any moment.

Plus, you like shooting it with the Target stocks!

No harm, no fowl.

Or, is that foul?

Nothing wrong with putting Targets on pre-model Smiths... as long as they are period correct.

If you're going to shoot a classic four- or five-screw non-model-marked revolver, you are entitled to put on it whatever stocks will get you closest to the accuracy you want. Just don't lose the original stocks, and put them back on the gun if you ever sell it.

A few days ago I took a Pre-28 to the range, but I left the numbered magnas at home. Instead, I dressed up the old warhorse in some smooth Kurac neo-cokes. MUCH easier to hang on to, and I got better groups than I had generated with the original wood. The high-end wood on what was designed to be a plain-wrap .357 looked a little odd -- but when accuracy improves, who cares?

Well I guess it is wrong since mine is a 4 screw and the target stocks may not be period correct;-)

OK, I cleaned up my earlier response to hide my initial oversight. But you may have to file an Anachronism Variance Application to cover the issue identified by SP. (And since the stocks I mentioned are even more recent than yours, I guess I need to file one too!)

Maybe I better put the original stocks back on

If you're going to put targets on a pre-model, at least use the football versions. That way they would look period correct. DO NOT use the deep speedloader versions. They would look completely out of character.

Trouble is I don't own a set that isn't attached to its rightful owner

If its a safe queen or a target gun only that gets shot with low power waddcutters then i like to leave the stock wood grips on.
if its a gun that I shoot regularly with practice ammo that is close to the ammo I load it with for serious carry then I put what ever grip on it that will give me maximum control and accuracy at the business end of the gun.
