Default pre model 28 nickle

hi
the only nickel guns made in the model 28 were 25 made for the florida HP
and they were model marked guns in 4 screw.
there was a few made later in the 70,s but they were brushed nickle it is most likely a refinished gun, is the hammer and trigger nickle. there has been one on some of the auction sites and it is a refinished gun.

No, they should not be. Jim's point was that, typically, non-factory
nickel guns often have the whole gun nickeled.

What is the serial number of this gun, and what is the barrel length.
Is the nickel high-polish, or brush finish ?

Without pictures, and without a serial number, you are not being
very efficient with our time .

One possible clue is an N stamp on the rear cylinder face, and another under the stocks on the bottom of the grip frame, if the seller will let you look. These are rare from the factory as noted by Jim and others; a few were nickled from a blue finish without intending to make a "rare" gun out of it, but some are deliberate fakes.

Appears to be 1954 production, an early gun in the series.

The 25 high polish Florida Highway Patrol guns were in serial number range S189071 and S192687 and were all 5" guns and marked 28 no dash and had FHP 32-56 stamped on the side.
The 54 28-2 marked brushed nickel ones from June of 1972 were in the N28400 and N59622 range with one exception serial number S287571, all of these were 4" guns.

Yours has to be a refinish in my opinion.

It's refinished and it's worth maybe $300 as a shooter to someone who wanted it badly. To me it's a $250 gun at best and you can tell the offerer (he's not a seller until it sells and at that totally ridiculous price it would take a real sucker to make it happen) I said so.

$600 is too high as so many have said.

If someone really likes nickeled guns, prefers the 4" barrel, and wants a shooter w/o any concern for collector value, I don't think $400 would be too much.

You are absolutely entitled to your opinion but I don't know a gunshop or gun owner who wouldn't be offended or at least laugh at you if you offered them $250 for a fully functional 4" Model 28 (particularly with an "S" serial number) even if it was Armaloyed, NP3'd or hard chromed.

S120313 is not close to the FHP contract that I know about. Its also
much too early for the brushed-nickel 4" guns ; they are in the N
series. Also, the FHP guns are 5" high-polish nickel.

Its always possible that it was a special order, but it's going to cost
$50 to find out.

Dave T- Let them laugh. In a free market they can laugh at any offer... just as I can laugh at an asinine asking price like $600 and continue laughing as I take my money somewhere else.

Well said, SP.
There is an abundance of guns coming available on the market and a shortage of buyers with cash. It is a soft market and I am all for making low offers and letting the dealers know that the days of obama panic buying is over. I am doing my part to bring down the price of the used guns in shooter and non collector grade.
There are 15-20 used S&W's in this little town where I live and many of them would fit in my safe. If dealer #1 don't dicker, dealer #2 will.
As far as a non factory nickel job on a Model 28, it would have to be cheap to even get my interest. 200-250. Then why would I want a Model 28 Pimp gun??

I'm down for $300 for that gun, a non-collectable, S series or no S series, it's just a shooter, period.

I wasn't justifying the $600 asking price. Don't make out like I said something I didn't. All I was pointing out was unlikely price of $250 for a perfectly functional 4" Model 28.

Insulting as you may want to be there are any number of people who use guns hard and can see the advantage of a very durable finish like hard chrome or electroless nickel. Most of the ones I know wore badges and sure weren't pimps.

DT- I don't believe I put any words in your mouth and I apologize if it sounded as if I did. I was merely trying to point out that a dealer is free to ask any price he thinks he can get and any shopper is free to buy, haggle, or look elsewhere.

Just out of curiosity, how much do you think the dealer in question gave the seller of this modified HP? I would bet a dollar that no more than $200 was given for this pistol. You want a laughable offer then ask what a dealer will give you for your gun. In my experience most dealers offer absolutely INSULTING amounts for used guns. I understand that dealers must buy at wholesale and sell at retail to stay in business. But most dealers I have seen offer far, far less than a wholesale amount when trying to buy used guns.

To me the gun described is worth about $250. Is it a working, serviceable revolver? Sure. But to me (and I can speak on nobody's behalf save my own) it is worth no more than $250 if I were looking for such a gun. If it's worth more to someone else, then I say right on and more power to you. I'm sure many folks would shake their heads at some of my purchases.

You have to please yourself...

SaxonP, no apology was necessary. I was just clearing the air. I pretty much agree with you on all the points you made except if I wanted a shooter 28, that durable finish would not be a detraction but a plus. Consequently I'd be willing to pay a bit more than you but sure not the asking price.

After seeing the pictures I sure wish who ever did the re-finish hadn't done the rear sight too. Dang that makes them hard to see (LOL). KPK, not sure based on those pictures but it looks more like electroless nickel than hard chrome to me. Maybe a better shot would make it easier to guess at the process.
