Can anyone help identifying this S&W? Looks like a Highway Patrolman, not so marked, has no model number markings. Markings it does have:

I am new here, and have never had a S&W from this era, so educate me. What is a registered Magnum (as opposed to a non-registered Magnum)?

The registered magnums were the first 357 magnum caliber pistols made by S & W. RM #1 being delivered to J. Edgar Hoover of the FBI. There were given a registration number as well as a serial number. Not many made and currently they are worth quite a bit. Many RM's bring thousands in the gun market and are very desirable for collectors. This is just very simple info. The experts will chime in soon.

Welcome to the Forum from the SW Virginia Blue Ridge mountains.

When S&W introduced the .357 revolver in the 1930s, it was a custom revolver and the owner could send in paper work to have it "registered" in his name. The option was more popular than S&W thought, so it was discontinued around 1940.

Hi, and welcome! From 1935-1939 you could obtain a registration certificate for the .357, about 5500 produced. After this and before WW II, you could get the same gun but no registration offered, about 1400 made.

Both the Reg No. and Ser No. are a bit earlier than mine - so I'll guess 1939. The grips look correct. Look inside the right grip ... do you see the same serial number that you find on the butt of the gun?

I thought the same thing when I first saw his "screen name". But now I think it means "Lucky Stuff". Stuff wasn't the original word I used but I received a warning from the administrators that the "filters" didn't like my use of an underline in the 4 letter word I actually used. I won't say anything further regarding unwarranted censorship.

I'm waiting for the story of how he came by it. I hope it's not another newbie who went dumpster diving.
