Default 38/44 TRANSITION OUTDOORSMAN WITH KEITH BROWN GRIPS

MY KEITH BROWN HIGH HORNED GRIPS CAME TODAY SO I HAD TO TAKE SOME PICS OF MY NEWLY ACQUIRED TRANSITION 38/44 OUTDOORSMAN THAT DID NOT HAVE IT'S ORIGINAL GRIPS. THE GRIPS FIT GREAT AND THE GRAIN AND FINISH ARE JUST WONDERFUL!!!!!!
38/44 OUTDOORSMAN S70311 WAS SHIPPED IN SEP 1946. I HAVE NOT LETTERED IT YET. HERE ARE SOME PICS OF THE GUN WITH KEITHS GRIPS ON IT.

ENJOY!
BILL

Thumbs up

There's no finer variety of steel than a .38/44 with adjustable sights, and no finer wood to go on such a gun than a set of KB magnas. Congratulations on that fine package.

Sometime next week I expect to take delivery of a late-'30s Outdoorsman with a humpback hammer (likely original to the gun, since the chronology is correct) and wearing a set of postwar magnas (obviously not original). This situation just begs for some upgraded wood. If I can't find a set of Gagne Roper target stocks, I think I may be taking the Keith Brown plunge.

Nice condition!

I shot one of those 38/44 outdoorsmans back in the late 70's, though that particular gun had it's barrel replaced with what appeared to be a Model 19's barrel.

that rig is beautiful! and KB is such a nice guy to boot. as a friend told me, he just really enjoys doing business with nice folks who are honest, polite and provide quality work and service. he is making a matching pair of right & left thumbrest stocks for me (i am ambidextrous but right eye dominant) - and hopefully a nice set of roper style stocks for Colt New Service in 45 Long Colt

I think that's an effect of the angle of the photograph. The plane of the revolver is leaning away from the focal plane in the camera, so the perceived angle of the sight blade to the ramp shifts a bit.

Thanks to all! As most know, finding High Horned Grips in good shape is hard to do and then because the frames changed sizes, it is not guaranteed that they will fit. So, I knew Keith had made some for Jim Fisher based on some actual grips and asked him to make me a pair. I made one measurement for Keith, sent him the medallions and the result is fabulous! I've said it many times, Keith is the Michealangelo of wood! There just isn't anyone better!
Larry-will you be at Tulsa in April?
Bob-left you a message on a Triplelock.
Dave-yes, it is the angle. I"m still trying to get my photography down.
Keith has a price list on his website depending on the type grip you want and the wood used.
Thanks again,
Bill

What's that crud around the checkering, in the grooves? Can't it be cleaned out with a screwdriver or similar instrument?

What are his prices? I didn't see them in the link.

That is the real meaning of the word "Classic " when speaking about S&W revolvers.

Very nice. The N frame in 38 or 357 is my "go to" gun when accuracy is required.

Thank you for posting the pictures Bill. This is actually my first attempt to replicate the transition magnas which have a distinctly different shape at the horn compared to the later more common magnas, you can feel the difference in the had also. T-star, there is nothing in the groove, I think it's an effect of the light in the picture and the type of groove I used in the border, having tried and not yet perfected a way to actually route the border it is hand cut with a U carving tool, this leaves a slight rounded bottom profile that is bouncing back some light. When viewed actually in the hand the effect if not present. I find it an acceptable alternative along the way as I try to refine the method since I'm trying to replicate the look and feel, not actually forge a copy. kscardsfan, the medallions can sometimes be located new on Ebay or salvaged from damaged older grips found at gunshows. Thanks to all for the compliments.

Keith

Bill, I'm here in NC for a 30 day break. Might go to the Louisville Show if my C&rR renewal gets here in time. It's currently lost in the mail.

I think what appears to be "crud" is actually the alternating light and dark grain of the wood here and there giving that impression as the light reflects in the groove!

John,
Enjoy your stay and come back in the fall when I will be in your neck of the woods.
Jerry-we are going to see if it shoots very well with Elmer's loads! IF I do decide to part with it, I'm sure it will head to California!

I always look forward to opening the threads with Keith Brown grips. Like this one, the S&Ws are always nice. The KB grips are just the "icing on the cake". Like usual, they look fantastic.

When Keith comes on here and says that they were his first attempt to replicate this style, it is really amazing. I don't think there is anything he can't do with a piece of wood. And, speaking of wood, Keith must have the best woodpile of all time. The grain in his grips is always second to none!
