Default Engraved RM

Any thoughts by you RM experts on this example that's been on one of the auction sites for a while. Specifically I'm wondering about the quality of engraving. It does have a documented FBI connection however.
Chuck

Chuck...the photo really isn't good enough to comment on the quality of the engraving. What does the seller say about it?

Bill, the seller doesn't say anything about the engraving actually other than it is engraved. I'm only interested in it because of the FBI connection and the one that lives in my house I've posted a couple more of the pictures from the internet. The engraving reminds me of some of the ones I seen from King's house engraver out in San Francisco.

Chuck

I assume you think it is not factory engraving - that is my opinion,
as well. Personally, I think the engraving is 10 or more years later
than the gun itself. Maybe even 20 years later.

Chuck...the engraving is well done although I don't recognize the style of the engraving. The stocks are obviously post-war and may have been made when the engraving was done. It would be interesting to know if there are any stamps on the grip frame that may reveal when the gun was refinished (if by S&W), or possibly the initials or name of the engraver. Do you know the Registration Number of the revolver?

Chuck:

I have looked at these photos of this gun many times and for some reason the engraving has never "spoken to me", but I do think that it is a cool package. I am concerned that the RM hammer has been replaced with a standard hammer, as I cannot see any concentric grooves on the hammer sides. That is a gun that I would like to handle in person, before I put my $'s on the table.

I don't recognize the style,engraver at all.

Question for the RM experts,,,,,Is the small portion of the barrel that extends forward of the rib a bit too tapered,,,from the rib to the muzzle itself,,. Perhaps a cut barrel? The last pic really shows the profile.
Seems like that small portion should be better defined with a straight line to the crown.

Realizing a reblue due to the engraving was in order and that some polishing was probably done, perhaps they got carried away in that area, but it looks quite out of shape to me in the pic(s).

Chuck, What's the serial number & Reg. number? Wild chance it might be in my data base, with more info. As said above, I doubt the engraving is factory - just doesn't "feel" factory to me. Ed. #15
