Default Pre-10 market average?

New guy so go easy on me for not doing a search on this. But what's average market on a pre-10 these days?

My first ever gun was an old Military & Police .38 Special. I bought it back in 1992 for $110. There was no shine to the blue left at all but the bore was good and it shot accurately enough for a beginner. I can't remember for certain but I think the gun dated from around 1948 or so.

I traded it later on toward a 686 and I wish I'd never done so as it would be nice to still have my "first one" 18 years later.

I look for good deals on them every so often. There's a gun & pawn near the office who gets them from time to time. He usually prices them around $199. The last one I looked over had a big pit in the barrel so I passed.

I was in there Tuesday and he had 3 at that price. Two with dull and fading nickel and one with blue in almost the same hue as what I traded off. I almost asked to look at it but he had the cylinder zip tied and I didn't want to bother him to cut it since I'm not going to be ready to buy any time soon (other projects ongoing).

Call me cheap but I'd really like to be a bit closer to my orginal $110 for a replacement of my "first one". If I could do $150 or better for one with good bore and lockwork then I'd have to jump on it. Am I dreaming or is that possible in these days where S&W revolvers seem to be going up like gold.

All Smiths seem overpriced to me these days. It just seems like people
will willingly pay whatever a seller wants. I have a pre 10 that I bought
about 4 yrs ago at a gun show for 100.00. It is from 54-55 era by the
serial # c306xxx, matching numbers and tight action. It is also almost
solid brown with hardly any bluing left so the guy behind the table was
anxious for a quick sale. Hunting for a bargain is part of the fun.

It is possible to find solid pre-model M & Ps for $150-200, but you will search a lot to find a decent one in this price range. Easier in the $200-250 range in my recent experience.

Thanks for the responses so far.

I'll never build up my gun purchase fund if I don't quit nickle and diming it to death like I did at Midway this morning.

I just couldn't resist the digital scale that goes off of its $19.99 sale price tomorrow and to make shipping more efficient I grabbed one of their 46" tactical rifle cases which are on sale for $16.99
