Fuzzy Farrant Grip Offerings - and John Hurst examples
This is a collection of Fuzzy Farrant offering sheets. Thanks to Fred
Saltus ( Homie) for 4 of these variations.
This first sheet is from Dec 1 1975. The last hardwood offered,
Zebrawood, has been blacked out. Presumably the wood is no longer
available, or there was some problem working with it.
In this next sheet, from Nov 1 1976, the price of the Ruger 44 magnum
has been raised from $45 to $60 .
These next two sheets are from Dec 12 1977. In this sheet, the price
of the Makassar Ebony has been changed, and the rosewood entry has
been lined out. Curiously, cocobolo is a genuine rosewood, so its not
clear what the rosewood entry actually refers to.
In this next sheet, the price of both the Makassar Ebony and the
cocobolo have been changed, and the rosewood is still inked out. In
additition, there is a note from Fuzzy advising that the rosewood is
not available.
This last sheet is from May, 1982, and is very different. The paper color
itself has been changed, the sketches of the grip styles are different,
and the choice of hardwoods is very different.

I believe these to be Farrant stocks. I traded dearly for them a couple of years ago.
Like them a lot.
N frame square butt with no frame modification.

Just as an aside, I have a pair of K-frame grips that I had made by John Hurst back in the early '70s. I eventually modified them so that they were very similar to Fuzzy's version requiring the cutting off the front lower portion of the grip frame. I accomplished near the same shaped grip without having to do that by removing just enough wood to allow only a slight bit of the grip frame to protrude through the wood at that point.
For those of you who don't remember the name, John Hurst was, like Fuzzy, an LAPD officer. John began whittling stocks off-duty for himself and friends in his garage. One of those friends was fellow LAPD member Guy Hogue who himself went on to grip-making in a BIG way!

Speaking of John Hurst, the grips in this next picture are FITZ TEN-O-GRIPS named "The Gunfighter" and made of molded plastic. This picture comes from the Cooper book, and is mis-labeled.
This next picture is, really, John Hurst grips.
I also have a couple pictures of Walter Starks work, which I add later.

You can see the similarities between these stocks- all these guys (Hogue, Stark, Hurst and Farrant) were buddies, worked at the Academy and compared their stocks with the others. John (Hurst) always talked about Stark and Farrant. Hurst and Farrant stocks were sold at the Academy store; I remember about a dozen or so gathering dust in the case. Before John Hurst died, he had about 30 or so stocks, new, that he offered to GIVE me. I took one set and told him to sell the rest. That's the kind of guy John was. I lived about 2 miles from him and used to stop by all the time. He coached me in PPC shooting in the late 80's and was responsible for my progress. He use to get mad at me because I told him I didn't like his semi-auto stocks. Wish I had the ones he made for me now; two sets in cocobolo for a 1911 and a rosewood set for an M52.
