I'm posting this to help someone on another forum ID an early hand ejector.

I think it's an early Target Model Hand Ejector, refinished but not by the factory.

His post:

Can someone tell me what Model this is..... I am still debating on keeping it or not but I would like to know more about it to help determine if I do or not.

So I don't have a camera but I have a Blackberry camera so I snapped a couple pictures....

It may not be as old as I thought, he knew nothing about it other then it was his fathers. I after buying it from him I put it in my gun cabinet until now and I looked at it a little closer then I did the day I got it from him and I am going to just go out on a limb and say he was wrong about the whole gun.

First off I should have done a little more research on it as well as looked it over a bit better (we both live far away so we did it in a parking lot and I didn't look at EVERY inch of it like I should) Now there are no major defects and there are no major blemishes but on the top of the barrel there are a bunch of dates and they go upto Dec. 19 01 (PAT'D dates)

I dont see any model numbers at least that I am aware of - Here are the pictures of all the numbers on the revolver so maybe one of you could help me out.

Could someone tell me what kind of S&W this is and the aprox Value. I am wondering what I have now...

My reply:

Can you take pics of the numbers on the bottom of the butt and the rear sight from the top?

Do the numbers on the butt and the rear face of the cylinder match the number under the barrel? They should if no parts have been changed.
The serial number is the one on the bottom of the butt. If it's missing you have a gun with a defaced serial number. The number visible on the frame when the cylinder is open is an assembly number and is irelevent for identification.

The gun has been refinished. The "B" on the bottom of the barrel in front of the serial number means the gun left the factory with a blued finish. Are the trigger, hammer and extractor star plated? If so the refinish was not done by S&W - they would have left those pieces in the original finish.

As to value, that depends on whether it's a factory refinish or not and whether the adjustable sight is factory or not.

I still suggest posting this on The S&W Forum for more definitive answers.
Those guys really know their subject and love a good investigation like this.

I can post your pics and info there if you don't want to register. Let me know.

His reply:

The Bottom of the butt does not have any numbers. Everything is the same finish wise, trigger, hammer, and extractor star all look like the same finish as the gun.

It also the Cylinder has the same numbers as the barrel.

Why does the top of the barrel have all those numbers? I thought they were patten dates...... but why does it go upto Dec.17.01 if its the age that everyone is saying it is?

There was no mention of the frame size or caliber, but if it is a K or medium frame in .38 Special this is a .38 Military & Police Target, either a first or second (engineering) change, made between 1906 and 1909. Agree it should have a serial number on the bottom of the butt, and was originally blue. It appears to have a replacement front sight blade (and stocks) also.

The patent dates on the barrel are consistent with an earlier M & P; the most common variation, the fourth change, would have a 1914 date here.

It is a K frame, marked S&W 38 special CTG

Also, regarding patent dates, he states: I understand that but it starts out APR.9.89 moves on to MAR.27.94 then MAY.21.95 - JULY.16.95 - AUG.4.96 - DEC.22.96 - OCT.4.98 - OCT.8.01 and then finally DEC.17.01

From the SN on the barrel it is a 1905 .38 Hand Ejector Target Second Change. It is right in the middle of the serial number range which ran from 1906-09.

FWIW, saying it is a Hand Ejector isn't really helpful as all S&W swing-out cylinder guns, regardless of of frame size or caliber, are Hand Ejector models. This distinguishes them from the top-break guns commonly referred to as Automatic-Ejector types. The CTG on the barrel has nothing to do with the model, it is merely the abbreviation for cartridge.

I'd put a value of about $400 on it.

The front sight could be factory, as they would install most any combination of available sights on the target revolvers.

An easy question if it were not refinished; it's more valuable than a refinished non-target gun, but not as much as an original one even if it only had 50-60% blue. I'd guess in the $400-450 range if it is mechanically sound as a shooting gun, but as usual I am interested to hear differing opinions.
