Default M frame revolvers

Until recently, I was unaware of the M frame guns by S&W.

I know about the I frame, the J, the K, the L, the N and the x frames, but the M frame escaped me notice.

Can any of you guys tell me more about it and how it compared the the I frame? I have an I frame gun in .32 S&W Long and also a J frame in the same caliber and have noted the difference in those two, but have thus far not seen an M frame gun.

M frames were the smallest Hand ejector frame used in .22 models (the original "Ladysmith") in the early 1900's I think they stopped in the 20's.

Another cool thing was the "C frame". One experimental model 73 made back in the '70's that was between the J & K. It would have given us a 6 shot .38

Here is a link that displays the frame sizes including the M which was a very early small sized 22 revolver.

Smith and Wesson Hand Ejector revolver information

Hope this helps.

Yes, it does.

Was the M frame ever produced in anything other that a 22 rimfire?

No, just in the 7 shot .22 Long.

Yes, .22 Long, not .22 Long Rifle. You can chamber and shoot .22 LR but eventually the forcing cone will crack. Cracked forcing cones are probably the most common ailment found on Ladysmiths.
